The Black Lion, Long Melford

The staff were amazing. Super helpful, friendly and nothing was too much. The food was also incredible, definitely order the steak and the cooked breakfast was very good. A really nice clean place in a stunning location. Great products provided in the bathroom too. Would fully recommend.

Unfortunately due to a mix up between systems our booking didn't make it through. We booked the big suite so as a result couldn't have it which was disappointing. We still had a nice room and we were appropriately compensated for the mix up but it was a tricky start to the trip. As a result id recommend calling them to confirm once booking on booking.com. I'm 6ft 2 and had to duck significantly under the shower in our room too which was a bit annoying but aside from that everything else was brilliant and certainly would fully recommend staying with them.

Really lovely hotel with lots of character and very cosy. Staff went out their way to help. Really enjoyed the breakfast....we would definately return. . Hotel also accepts dogs staying which is a nice touch.....

On booking confirmation told Hotel restaurant was closed on both of the days we were staying (Monday and Tuesday), and the bar closed at 6pm on Tuesday - probably their quietest days. As it turned out we had no luck to find a place to eat either lunch or dinner anywhere as was fully booked, even for a drink in a coffee shop - told for 'Valentine's', so watch your dates if you have to eat out on these days.....

The location was great. The welcome was good. Easy check in on line. Our room was well presented and very comfortable. Breakfast was lovely. My gluten free dietary needs were well catered for. The staff were friendly and helpful.

We were disappointed with the service charge added to the bill for dinner. Prices for dinner were a little on the high side, but this added charge made it more expensive. We do like to give a tip but feel it should be our choice how much. A small irritant in an otherwise fantastic stay.

The location was great situated at the quieter end of the high street with the green in front of you. We also visited Melford Hall which was a nice day out and only a 5 minute walk from the black lion. The hotel is decorated nicely and the bar has a cosy snug feel. We were sad that the lounge area no longer existed as that was a lovely quiet space where we first had a hot chocolate on a winters days couple of years back and when we said we would be back to stay! It’s now extended dining space which I’m sure is simply more profitable. Our room was really comfortable and a good size for us to be able to fit our cot in and there be plenty of space still. It’s also really helpful to us when the bar and dining areas are still within range of our monitor to help us relax and enjoy some adult time while lil one is sleeping. Bar staff and staff in general were very friendly and helpful. I do think some improvements could be made around the food. We had dinner on the first night and breakfast on the first morning and a family roast on the Sunday. I was disappointed with breakfast, while relatively tasty service was slow and it seemed to come out luke warm and overall I didn’t think it was good value for money being £15. My mum had croissants and some toast and that was charged at £15 too so I think so different pricing options would be better here! The dinner was tasty enough presented nicely but no real wow factor, my husband’s steak was not great and the roast was a very decent sized portion, though the potatoes seemed like they were left over from earlier and then fried in oil to make crispy, not great. I would definitely stay here again, it has a lovely feel to the place and is definitely a cosy place to visit in the colder months.

Very good pub/hotel in a fine location, the outlook from our room being over a large green at one end of the long main street which presumably gives Long Melford its name. Food and service were high standard. Nearby is a fine example of one of the impressive 'wool churches' which arose in this area from the wealth from wool in the Middle Ages. Plenty to visit locally.

Parking is mainly on the green, which isn't ideal but OK and fairly accessible.

My husband, 4 year old and I had a great stay in the family room (main room plus separate room with bunk beds). Massive bathroom with shower over bath. Comfortable beds. Great breakfasts - good range of choices and generous portions. Lots of parking at front or on/near the green.

The shower was a bit temperamental and at a bit of an odd height - ok for me at 5'3, not so good for my 6'3 husband.

A very comfortable and quiet room at the back of the property. Very clean, big bath and huge shower head. Well decorated with the kind of attention to detail which makes the stay special. Cooked breakfast was the best I have had in ages. Praise indeed because I have had some great ones. Great views of Holy Trinity Church, Melford Hall and the green. A pleasant walk to the high street. We started a 6 - 7 circular walk starting from the Black Lion where we walked up the west side of the green towards the church. Walk takes in Farmland, woodland and views of Kentwell Hall.

If I had to be picky I would have re siliconed the bath!

The room was huge and the bottles of shampoo and bubble bath ect were a very nice brand . The breakfast was all Plentiful and served to you rather than a buffet which is never nice. The staff were very pleasant and the hotel was small not too many rooms to feel impersonal.

Too close to the road so you can hear the traffic but small issue as rest was perfect

The bed in our room was far to low and really not very comfortable at all. Unfortunately we both had a very bad night sleep. Think we would have had to request another room if we had been staying more than one night. Good point the restaurant menu was really nice and the food good and again staff really freindly. And breakfast excellent.

We stayed two nights as a couple with an 8-year-old sharing the room. A temporary extra bed was provided for him, very comfortable, although it obviously made the room a little less spacious. The cleaner dealt admirably with our clutter and large collection of cuddly toys. Room was attractive and had a lovely bathroom, good view, and felt luxurious. Bed very comfortable. Staff helpful and friendly. No noise at all in our room from road or dining areas in our room (3). Breakfast was fantastic. We failed to book dinner in Long Melford for the second night, and everywhere was fully booked -- but a table was found for us in the restaurant. Food in restaurant extremely good (and children's menu spot on, which isn't always a given) and felt like it delivered the right quality for the price, without fussiness. Good beer, and the downstairs dining and bar spaces were lovely, friendly without being rowdy, and very festive for Christmas.

There were a few small issues with the booking and how much was outstanding on the bill (booking.com had taken full pre-payment but I think the hotel were working on the basis of their normal, smaller, deposit) but resolved quickly.
