My teenage son and I (and our dog) had a great stay here after he finished a summer course at the Lancaster university, we wanted to stay in the area for a bit and explore. The location is great for walks, the hotel is very dog-friendly and the food was great, both breakfast and both dinners we had on the terrace. I loved the wallpaper in Room 1 :)

There were a couple of small hiccups during the dinner first night, but nothing that one can’t understand being human themselves, and all was ok in the end.

The setting, the style and the history of the hotel. The beer garden. The helpfulness and friendliness of the staff. The ample car park. The weather.

Insufficient coat hangers (a few more were provided following our request). After our first night our wet towels were not changed (they were changed following our request). There was some confusion and long delays in the serving of our first breakfast. (We may have ourselves contributed to the confusion as we did make a change to our breakfast arrangements at short notice). There was no mirror near to a plug socket so my wife had difficulty in drying her hair.

Old style building with only stairs. Only 6 rooms in the hotel and we had 3 for the group. All rooms were newly updated with modern vanity and comfort. Even though there was no A/C, we opened the windows and turned on the fan to help circulate cool airs. It’s conveniently located by the water and hence a short walk to witness a wonderful sunset. Lovely place! We’ll definitely stay here again if opportunity presents itself.

A larger fan to speed up air circulation in hot days. Allowing upper windows to lower to vent out hot air would greatly improve in room comfort.

The room was very clean and tastefully decorated, in-keeping with it's location: Lots of references to the local history. Given that we were out of season, the room and hotel were very quiet, with a relaxed yet welcoming feel. The staff were very attentive and friendly. Access to the accommodation is restricted and via an electronic key fob with a separate room key. There is a kettle etc for tea and coffee making in the room (a good variety of tea choices and coffee bags plus posh biccies) but, as there is no fridge, milk is available from the snug or restaurant in an insulated flask/bottle. The dinner menu was good quality pub grub - and lots of it - although a couple of the starters were a bit pricy. Solution: The nibbles are better value and probably a better option given the portion size of the main! The choice at breakfast was exceptional with croissants baked to order and goodies beyond the usual 'full english', although this was itself really good. The rest ranged from fresh fruit, cereals, porridge, yoghurt, scrambled egg and smoked salmon on English muffins etc to both Eggs Benedict and Florentine. The staff didn't bat an eye at a slightly picky insistence on runny eggs and the hollandaise on the side (Experience has taught me it can be too lemony, but this wasn't the case here! We had a lovely time and will certainly return again (out of season, while it's still nice and quiet.)

Somewhere other than the bar or the room to sit with a coffee or tea on return after a day out so we could read a book or do the crossword comfortably would be nice. We think there may have been another space beyond the bar, but this wasn't obviously open or signposted to us, perhaps because it was so quiet?

Easy to find but satnav took us past it to the generous car park around the corner. Lovingly restored building and well-appointed rooms accessed through a different door from the outside of the pub. We arrived later than expected and nearly had to rush into an early dinner as the kitchens closed at 8pm. This was not the only hotel with this quirk. Seems Northeners eat earlier! Food delicious, good wines, and the men were impressed at the beers. Breakfast generous. Friendly staff. Thoroughly recommend this venue. I booked this hotel mainly because of the ancient St. Patricks chapel virtually 5 mins away by foot around the corner. Don’t miss it! Spectacular views of the bay.

Perhaps being able to eat a bit later, but maybe as it was towards the end of the main holiday season, was to be expected.

Beautifully maintained, outside bar area and bar and restaurant. Rooms are lovely and clean and roomy with a large shower and fluffy towels. Great location for a walk along the cliffs.

These are very small constructive criticisms as I would happily stay here again. The noise level from the outside bar is quite loud and I would imagine would annoy some people, it didn’t me as I quite like the noise of people having fun. Next one was the bed 😟 I have three slipped discs and have replacement hardware, the bed was really hard and I did lose a bit of sleep… this is probably personal preference, having said that the pillows were lush!!! I do know they are talking about doing up the beds soooooo maybe they can invest in some Hynose beds 😋.It’s a very busy pub, with very busy staff and I get the impression they all try their best but are running around and it’s a bit manic, but all being efficient. I think credit should be given where credits due.

The room was a large size and the bed was really comfortable. I really appreciated the wet room. The teas and coffees were really nice and the fresh milk was really appreciated. The staff are lovely. Very friendly and helpful. The food is really good. Very good portions and good quality ingredients.

Bit of a smell in the accessible bathroom. I didn't want to complain as they were lovely and really busy. Also very short staffed. It didn't spoil our stay just wasn't as pleasant as it might have been. I was just pleased to have a room that was so helpful to me.

The Royal has an idyllic location, a real hidden gem. Service and Food exceptional! Room and decor lovely. Very clean throughout with superb attention to detail . ! Would give this warm homely hotel a definite 10 out of 10 and we been on scores of hotel breaks over the years! !

The only slight criticism I will mention is the bed in room 8 was not the most comfortable but did not detract from our fantastic stay. .

Loved the decor, the touches in the rooms such as plug sockets with USB ports everywhere, great sized TV, gorgeous finishings, lovely white company toiletries, taylors coffee bags. Dinner was delicious as was breakfast. Comfortable outdoor beer garden with fairy light shelter from rain. Cute artwork on walls and lots of parking. Right next door to a gorgeous church overlooking Morecambe Bay and a pretty community garden. We stayed overnight en route to Scotland and after visiting Lancaster Castle. Was able to stop at asda 10 mins away before heading to Scotland, cheapest fuel I've seen in years.

We booked 2 rooms and clearly stated who was the solo traveller and who was the couple. For some reason my brother in law who was the solo traveller was given a huge room compared to ours. Views from window overlooked car park. Room 6. Room quite hot but fan was provided.

Such a wonderful amenity for Heysham and the surrounding area. We stayed there for 2 nights prior to our trip from Heysham Ferry Port to the Isle of Man. However this is a stunning area of the country and well worth a visit. Everyone was very helpful and friendly towards us when we weren't too sure about the best places to visit and the best walking routes. We really enjoyed our stay and thought it such a shame that Heysham only gets one train a day solely for connecting to the ferry. It deserves much more than this!

The fact that Northern Rail only provides one train a day to this lovely coastal village.
