The Howard Arms is probably the best place we have stayed with our dog, everything was 1st class, it's in a great location for exploring the area ,the room was spotlessly clean( a blanket was left for our dog)the food was fantastic and all the staff were friendly and efficient a credit to the owners( and dog biscuits where in plenty of supply).we stayed for 2 nights with our nervous little dog and am sure by the end of the break she wanted to stay longer as she had made loads of friends. Can not wait to start planning our net visit 😊 5⭐️

The staff made the place all very attentive and helpful. Nothing seemed too much bother. The food was excellent and very well priced. Restaurant and bar area was very clean and well decorated. The free roaming dogs are also an asset to the place very well behaved. The locals made us feel welcome when at the bar and having a drink.
Although the room was lovely and had everything you needed in some areas just needed a little bit of tlc I.e. wallpaper a little tired and bathroom would benefit new sealant and maybe a lick of paint but that is being super super critical.

Location. Evening meal.and breakfast were very good. Bed was large and comfy. Bathroom was large with plenty of hot water. Staff were friendly and helpful. Parking outside after 6pm
Plug sockets near bed. Had to move a bedside table to charge phone and toothbrush as no shaver socket. No plug sockets on other side of bed.

The staff were very welcoming and friendly. This place has many hikers come walking Hadrian's wall and accommodates them well. I had a lovely single room with en suit bathroom. Very comfortable bed with window overlooking the small market town. Food is available from the bar in the evening and morning. Make sure to book a table for an evening meal as it gets busy! I had an amazing chicken casserole that felt like "just how mum makes" to fill me up after a long day's walk. No microwave from frozen stuff. The bar is great, lots of laughs from regular patrons with a back room with TV for football/music/entertainment. There's a small beer garden also for a bit of outdoors.

Lovely friendly local pub, stayed on a work trip, unfortunately didn’t get to eat dinner we were too late but it looked lovely and breakfast was great. Rooms were clean, spacious comfy beds, nicely decorated and fab showers. Would definitely recommend and wouldn’t hesitate to stay again.
Dinner service finishing at 8.30 was a bit of a surprise and I’d had delayed trains. But we’d know for next time.

This is the most amazing place to stay! Some places say they are dog-friendly, but the Howard Arms goes the extra mile! Really friendly & helpful staff, spacious and comfy rooms (& beds). Now let's get to the food - we had our evening meal here and despite the restaurant being busy, the food was fantastic! All diets catered for. The meals came quickly and were all fabulous, service throughout was great - attentive without feeling mithered. We stayed for breakfast the following morning and once again it didn't disappoint! We'll definitely be coming back!
Nothing! It really was that good!

Excellent inn. The Howard Arms seems to be the centre of the community. Much more than a pub. Restaurant Excellent with a wide range of menu. Breakfast also exceptional with waitress service. Friendly. Room a good size with very good shower room. Free parking in the public car park at rear and ev charging points.
Can't fault anything.

What a great location - central and very dog and people friendly. Easy check in, nice touch asking if we needed fresh milk for coffee and then bottling it ready to go to room. Room was snug and cosy so not the largest but functional and comfortable. Dinner looked great but we arrived after 20:30 and missed it. Bar had plenty of options and plenty of friendly regulars, lots of dogs around too which was great for our Jack Russell. The owners were both lovely, very accommodating and couldn't do enough for you, things like this make these places so well worth returning to which we will again. After a good sleep the breakfast the next morning was OUTSTANDING and the best one of 4 hotels on our trip, they prepared and lit the open fires in front of us as we ate, it was wonderful. Highly recommended and (notably) no extra costs for our dog which was £10-£20 at every other hotel we visited for 4 nights.
Nothing really

Not our first visit but just as marvellous as the last time! Welcome, room, beer, food, service all top notch. Thoroughly recommended.
Parking is a bit of an issue as they are dependent on a free car park to the rear which, this time, was packed. As ever, though, the staff helped out and pointed out a space with no restrictions.

.The room was excellently prepared and v v clean. The facilities in the room were excellent. The shower was powerful and instantly hot. With a very busy bar downstairs there was no background noise at all. The bed was v comfortable too. All though I didn't dine the menu looked and smelled delicious.
Crisp were very expensive at £130 a packet and certainly not any thing special or deluxe. I would suggest another still well known but cheaper brand. A lack of front door key to get back in saw me rushing to get back after a person in another pub said the hotel was ready to lock up.
