Friendly and helpful staff and a really great pub. Good beer, good atmosphere, good food. You can (and should) pre-order breakfast the night before which speeds up the process for everyone involved and is particularly helpful if you want to head straight off! Pack-up lunches are available on request and again, you can order what you want the evening before.

The rooms are a little bit dated but still clean and comfortable. Because of the age of the building the location of the plug sockets is also fairly limited. Mostly a restriction of the building though and it didn't diminish our stay at all!

Private carpark off the road for motorbikes and the fact that the windows were new and opened beautifully wide so we got loads of fresh Alston air into the room. The breakfast was cooked fresh and served with big smiles. The beers are too notch too. I like this place!!!

Few bits were getting tired in rooms paper peeling off etc which quite a quick fix but we were 3 guys on bikes. I couldn’t care less. The room was super clean. The beds were super comfy and the linen was like new. Great nights sleep.

Great view, massive bedroom it was enormous and the king size bed was so soft it felt like sleeping on a cloud. Tea and coffee facilities were excellent, we had a cup of tea in the morning but forgot to eat the cookies 😞No doubt they were lovely too. The towels were big, white and very soft, there was body wash in the on suite. The landlord was joyful and nice and the breakfast was so yummy 😋 The cook was lovely and very good at her job and nothing was too much for her, a diamond 💎

Sorry but the shower head kept falling off the holder so I had to hold it by hand and the water 💦 went hot and cold, and the decor a little dated needs a touch up.

The room was spacious with a wonderful view of the hills and meadow. There was an added chair and workspace that made my four-night stay more comfortable. The hot breakfasts were cooked individually for each person with choices of help-yourself cereals and juices. I really enjoyed having the restaurant where I could eat dinner during my stay. The food was delicious and plentiful. The hosts were hospitable and very helpful with making arrangements for a taxi to take me to another village.

Perhaps the lighting in the corridor could be improved.

A pleasantly small old fashionedl hotel. My room was fine with lots of storage and a great view of a nearby hillside. An electric heater kept me warm and though the electric towel rail wasn't working, the temperature in the bathroom was okay. A bath was nice after two long walks on the South Tyne Trail and there was always plenty of hot water. The staff were friendly and the food was great and exceptionally good value. If you are staying at the hotel, then I would advise eating there. It might be your only option as although Alston appears to have several potential places to eat, none were serving meals on an evening. I was told that this had been the case all winter.

The shower was hopeless, but at least there is a bath.

Very friendly pub and staff. Outstanding breakfast cooked to order. Alston is surrounded by high fells and the roads are empty, unlike the Lake District.

Alston is struggling economically like much of the UK, with dead shop frontage and three of the six pubs shut. That's not the fault of the Cumberland Inn though. On a Monday night the Cumberland Inn is the only place that sells hot food for miles around.

had a wonderful at at The Cumberland Hotel, superb staff, so friendly and welcoming, breakfast is exceptional, all locally produced, cooked beautiful and fresh. Evening meals are cooked to order to the highest standard, the portions are fit for a King. The best ale is the Maxim. The rooms are as you would expect from an establishment of a much higher price. spacious, clean with everything you require. I stayed for two nights while working in the area, the scenery is spectacular and breath taking, it feels like you are on top of the world looking down on everything else. I would hope to be retuning to the area in the future and this is where I'll be staying.

superb breakfast, i have cycle toured and stayed at Cumberland Inn now at least 4-5 times and it has never failed me dried out our sodden cycle clothing for us in the tumble drier which was really appreciated

could have done with a little warmth from radiators/towel rails (admittedly to dry out cycle clothing that had been bucketed on most of the day), and a fire in the bar would have been very welcome but totally understand that heating costs have soared of late so perhaps that is me being unreasonable

We stopped over for a night cycling the C2C route. Staff were very friendly and accommodating of us, our bikes and need to have our bags and collected before and after our stay. Great breakkie and evening meal, plus nice selection of beer and whisky. Room was clean and functional, with comfy beds, new TV and clean bathroom with functional shower.

Location lovely, staff friendly and attentive, food very good and value for money, breakfast choices excellent. Good range of alcoholic drinks also reasonably priced, off road parking for patrons. Kept us a table in the bar, therefore we didn't go elsewhere, a nice touch as it became busy.

Shower over the bath with a curtain however no non slip mat and felt very unsafe (I have m.s), curtains in room thin so let lots of light in and also very noisy below early morning as staff arrived to start the day. All generally a bit tired and shabby round the edges but will certainly go again, that was part of its charm.
