I honestly had such a great time here. Staff were friendly and polite (even extremely patient after I cocked up their microwave). Pub quizzes were a lot of fun and my team came in second place! There were even two shower facilities in our rooms and lot of places for charging devices. The hostel is within walking distance to Micklegate, local pubs (including a Weatherspoons), and the local hospital. Rooms were kept clean and the morning breakfast was pretty good as well whilst being a bargain at the same time.

Can't complain about much, really. There were a lot of snorers in the room? The only main thing I can remember was that the dryer didn't dry well enough. Perhaps the heating coil is done?

Compared with a hotel B&B, this was amazing value. I was in a four-bed dormitory (2 x 2 bunk beds), Friday to Monday, which had a private shower-room for use only by those in the room. There was a desk & chair, a large wardrobe for hanging clothes and dedicated baskets for clothes and other personal belongings, which could be padlocked underneath the bottom beds. There was hot water available all day and a good working radiator, which was ideal for drying clothes, shoes and socks made wet in the rainy weather. Plenty of charging facilities. On the Saturday night, I was lucky to share the room with a group of three, two of whom were also running the Yorkshire Marathon on the Sunday; we made our way to the marathon together the next morning. The main value came in the facilities offered at the hostel: A large kitchen (free tea and coffee all day and complete cooking facilities for self-catering, plus breakfast in the morning for a small charge); a dining area and separate lounge to relax in; also a bar selling beer, wine, spirits or soft drinks, with a big screen above it for showing sports, and usually some nice background music playing in the evenings. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and I couldn't have had a nicer stay. I was introduced to a member of staff, who was also running in the marathon.

Nothing comes to mind.

Literally everything. The staff go above and beyond and, despite one guest causing somewhat of a ruckus, the staff dealt with it exceptionally well and ensured all the other guests were still having a good time. There were events on like a movie night, pumpkin carving, and Halloween party, and all on different nights, not typical of a hostel whatsoever! The staff were super helpful and were quick to assist guests with their luggage who were staying on a different floor and also gave guests a tour to ensure they knew where everything was.

I left the same day the Halloween party was on so I missed it. I also didn't stay long enough and wish I had booked an extra couple of nights in York! No faults on the hostels end whatsoever, entirely my own doing haha

The room was amazing, good size, lockers under the bed. The people who stayed in the room were really nice, The common room was very warm and welcoming along with the kitchen. The breakfast for £3.50 was good, there was cereals, toast and tea/coffee. There is free tea, coffee and juices through out the day, which is such a good bonus. I really like that the beds are made when you arrive too (many other hostels require you to make your own bed!) Which is a pain, so thank you. The city centre is about a 20 min walk, but there is a bus stop out side the hostel. The staff were all really helpful, warm and welcoming.

I think the only thing that could be improved are more plugs near the bed and lights, but I am not sure this is an easy fix.

Place ok but need to have female or male hostel than mixed room for those who don't mine or can manage. Some of us are not comfortable to mix room with male without knowing them or background. Also hotel cleaner to be well educate to greet when they find people in rooms when they come to lay beds and other, polite greeting will restore dignity and respect among staff and lodgers. Lastly time set for lodgers unable to use kitchen to be looked @once again. There should be a bit of flexibility because some of us use your place to stay and do some Long day shifts ,coming late and kitchen is close because late hour , l think we are adults.

Nice location facilities perfect and nice. Keep up few places needs attention on cab webs to be clear in some of bathroom and bedroom. It's good for money.

Fantastic hostel. Much higher level than expected. Great location, very polite and helpfull stuff. Nice place to rest, car park on site, small outside area where I could sit and rest. Everything what I needed was avaliable (even the ear plugs!) Breakfasts are basic and I did not use the option, but there was a fridge and cooking option so I cooked my own meals. Very nice part: hostel is organising free quided tours for the guests around York! They kept it even when only I attended (so I had a very nice, private, quided tour with Erica, who put great effort to tell me the stories and show me around, this was such a great part!). I am truly recommending for someone who is happy to share the room with a strangers (who will became your friends after 10 minutes together in the same room :D )

Nothing. All good.

September 2024

I spent one night in the hostel at the end of July 2024 (sorry for being late with my review). I arrived in the morning and left my bag in a special room in the basement. I took advantage of this the next day too, and came back to get my bag, just before going to the station and leaving York. When I checked in in the evening, I was warmly welcomed by Patrick who went round the ground floor of the hostel with me there are many services for guests; then he collected my bag and accompanied me to my room. I was delighted to have been able to chat with him! I felt like part of a family! There are photos of each member of the team right next to the reception desk with brief personal descriptions, and I believe there are organised tours for guests. I didn't have time to find out more. Also, you can leave your York Minster ticket, because once you've bought it, it can be used for a year and it's nice to know that other guests will be able to enjoy it and take davantage of it and then leave it for the next guest! I had a bed in a room for four women. The neighbours were super nice and respectful. It was clean and well equipped. We were able to talk to each other, which was very pleasant and interesting!

The mattress was nice and thick, really comfortable, I slept great. Also there were plenty of plugs available so there was space for everyone to charge their devices. Hostel had a nice vibe and very friendly staff. I stayed in a female only dorm and my roommates were really nice, if I stayed for longer than one night we probably would have hung out in the evenings.

The bunk beds are quite low, I am 5'3" and I couldn't sit up straight in the bottom bunk. Bathroom door had no lock, which was a bit inconvenient but fine since it was an en suite room and my roommates were all really considerate.

I had a great time! The staff were super friendly and always helpful. You can even watch Netflix with a beamer in the living room. But the absolute highlight was our walking tour with Erica. She was so knowledgeable and the tour made my experience of York just 10x better. Highly recommend! Info: Laundry is 4£ for washing 2£ for drying and I think you can get a washing pod for 1£ at reception. Breakfast was great for the price! If you need a vegan milk option they should have one on hand too, but just play it safe and tell them the evening before if you are planning on having the breakfast and they will make sure to provide you with some. The beds have sockets and USB ports for charging.

Two things that are easy and inexpensive to fix: Not enough hooks or places to put things, clothes, towels, etc. in the bathroom and all the knives in the kitchen are super dull. Just get some hooks from the hardware store and a knife sharpener from Ikea for 5£.
