Darwin's Townhouse

The position is perfect for seeing the town but quietly tucked away. The breakfast is superb and cannot be faulted. All the staff were friendly and went over and above to make us feel welcome. Bright and sunny!

I was expecting a room with a bath which was confirmed by booking.com but when we got there I was told that i had been sent an email saying the rooms with baths were an extra £35. I did not get this email and it would not have gone into junk as I move things across myself so read everything first. I do believe it was sent but I didn't receive it. The 2 rooms with baths were already taken when we arrived and were probably too expensive an option for us. The garden rooms are a bit small and the ensuite's shower was the electric variety and not really adequate. We were in room 19 so maybe it needs checking. I would still recommend it as a lovely place to stay!

Excellent breakfast and breakfast room and welcoming communial spaces, relaxing garden. Welcoming staff, and room in modern building very clean and comfortable with great furnishings. Well positioned in the city centre. Very pleasant stay. Good value for facilities and location.

Room a little tight for space once you have dropped your bags etc and shower again a bit cramped No onsite parking (was aware of this before booking). Parking very close by at a cost which was not that expensive. Main worry was leaving a company vehicle with equipment/tools onboard overnight but that was my choice.

Staff were super friendly and very accommodating. Rooms were very clean and the tea & coffee selection and facilities in the room were great. The cooked breakfast selection is fantastic with loads of options for vegetarians and vegans.

I mentioned this on departure and they were super empathetic and concerned about this but in the interest of transparency and honesty in my review - I had an issue with my room being left unlocked on the second night I stayed there. I went to a wedding and when I came back my room had been cleaned, bed made etc, but the door to my room was left unlocked and the main julliette balcony door left wide open. As I was staying in a room alone, I was a bit spooked coming back from the wedding as my initial thought was that the room had been broken into. I mentioned this on my departure and they were super shocked and empathetic about the situation. It was potentially to do with a maintenance person going into the room while I was out but still, its not an ideal experience.

Everything it was perfect very inviting we felt very welcome and comfortable. We loved the fact that it was pet friendly and our fur baby loved the garden area and he was very happy in our room. For us location was perfect right by the river for walks with the dog and only a few minutes walk into the town centre and the dog friendly pub opposite was perfect. Breakfast was beautiful (thank you for the extra sausage for our boy) and the staff couldn’t do enough to make us feel welcome. Perfect stay for people wanting to explore Shrewsbury and it was so quiet on a night time. We all slept like babies on a night.

Darwin's is a fabulously quirky hotel. The themed decor is fab, the rooms spotlessly clean, beds super comfy and we loved the option of using the sitting room and garden after getting a drink from the incredibly well-stocked honesty bar! The location is perfect, 2 of us got the train and it was a short 10 min walk from the station - our other sister drove, using the public car park round the corner was super convenient and reasonably priced. You can walk everywhere from here so it is great for exploring Shrewsbury. The breakfast was superb - excellent choice and quality. For us the most impressive aspect was the super warm welcome we got and just how friendly and helpful the receptionist was (I feel really bad that I can't remember her name as she was so lovely!). Me and my sisters all agreed we would highly recommend and would definitely stay here again. :-)

We stayed in the garden room for one night. The room was beautifully decorated and quite spacious. The bathroom was modern and the shower was good. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Parking was nearby and free overnight which was an unexpected bonus. It was lovely being able to cross the street to have a drink and then go next door for a delicious dinner. Breakfast was served in a really lovely room and we were impressed with the selection of food available.

There was a water pipe or pump that came on intermittently even though we weren't using the bathroom. That was the only complaint. Everything else was great.

It was clean, beautifully decorated and furnished. There was an honesty bar, board games, comfy lounges and a garden. Excellent breakfast - possibly the best I’ve ever had in a U.K. hotel. The staff members were very friendly and efficient. The beds were very comfortable. It really was a treat (even the toiletries and tea and coffee was better than normal)

Our room was hot and stuffy - the weather was very warm for September - the fan wasn’t much use and the windows didn’t open. This spoiled our stay as we didn’t sleep well.

We'd been to the theatre the night before and loved Shrewsbury so much we decided to extend our weekend and booked Darwin s. The lady on reception was really helpful! We took the Sabrina boat trip, ate in town, enjoyed some impromptu live music in the pub and shopped in the lovely artisan shops on the way back. Darwins is beautifully appointed, they offer an honesty bar, lounge with many books and games. The attention to detail is lovely. Breakfast was vast, well laid out and I was really impressed by the vegan and vegetarian options offered as standard ; no having to quietly ask and hope for something suitable to set me up for a day's exploring. Parking was in the large car park next door, the riverside only steps away and the shops equally close in the opposite direction. Highly recommended!

The hotel is a boutique style hotel. Very beautiful and very tastefully decorated around the Darwin theme. Our room overlooked the garden and is in a purpose built block. We had 2 twin beds (number 12) and the room was spacious and airy. There is no air con but a fan was provided along with robes and a travel ironing board and iron. Tea and coffee is available in abundance along with hot chocolate. If you prefer fresh milk for a cuppa, the hotel will provide this. Our beds were comfy and views over the garden are perfect. The garden is maintained to a high standard. On the ground floor you will get noise from floorboards from the upper floor which is to be expected. I'm yet to find a hotel were you don't get some noise. Toiletries were provided and are of a high standard and snell beautiful. The room was spotlessly clean. The young lady on reception is very knowledgeable and very friendly and made us feel so welcome. As she did at breakfast time. My son didn't want to get up for breakfast and she offered to make food up for him for me to take back. The breakfast is outstanding. A variety of pastries available along with fruit and nuts and hot breakfast is cooked to order. I opted for eggs california...2 poached eggs in bacon and a muffin with crushed avocado on the side. It was to restaurant standard. The hotel itself has a honesty bar whereby you help yourself and leave a note and are charged on leaving. We didn't use this but its such a good idea and there was a lot to choose from. I found this hotel to be welcoming, friendly, cosy and top notch. Thank you for making our stay so pleasant.

The only thing I didn't like was that I couldn't stay longer. It felt like home.

Brilliant location. We stayed in a fab room that was situated in a very attractive terrace style set of rooms at the end of the garden. Very comfortable. We had access to the main house which is beautiful inside. (The front view does not do this house justice). A lovely little sitting room with honesty bar. Bright & welcoming breakfast room. The staff (Ellie in particular) were very friendly, very attentive, very professional. The team looking after us was very polished. I can't wait to stay here again.

A very minor note is that the shower pressure was low. It took a while to get showered. This WOULD NOT put us off staying here again.
