Great quiet location and beautiful country house hotel in stunning setting. Friendly staff and top class food and dining experience. On-site parking and pet friendly. Highly recommend.

The website states all bedrooms are “equipped with immaculate en-suite facilities, featuring either a bath or a bath and shower combination” however we stayed in the Oak Room which does not have a bath. We also wanted to book in for dinner (when we arrived and checked in at 5pm) and were told they were already “fully booked”. We were eventually ‘fit in’ for dinner at 8pm, which we were grateful for (not wanting to go and find somewhere else to eat) and it was the most incredible meal. Out of this world.

Farthings is in a really beautiful setting and the surrounding villages are very pretty. The gardens are wonderful and the hotel is very tastefully decorated. We had a room with one of the lovely little balconies that we enjoyed our morning coffee on. The menu and dining area looked incredibly tempting but we unfortunately didn’t get to sample the food because we were attending a family party nearby but I wouldn’t hesitate to book again and stay for dinner in the future.

Our bed was very small and creaked with every slight movement!

We ended up with a lovely room (the first offered in the attached cottage was dated, gloomy and due for renovation, though it did have a kitchen and sitting room, neither of which we wanted or had expected). The food was truly exceptional and the staff really friendly, helpful and attentive, particularly when I became ill during the stay. I can't thank them enough for looking after me the way they did.

Advertised as having an EV charger (one of the main reasons we chose this hotel). As no prices advertised, we assumed it was free for guests to use, only to find out that it was a 3kwh charger for which they were going to charge £2.30 per hour. This would have taken at least 20 hours at a cost of over £46 for what would have cost us £2.40 at home. Very slow and extremely expensive. Needless to say we had to make other arrangements.

We keep coming back because the staff are kind and attentive, friendly whilst remaining respectful. The rooms are all large and uniquely furnished and spotlessly maintained. The gardens reflect the attention to detail shown throughout and are a place that draws the attention even if it’s just to look when it’s wet. The food, OMG the food, caps the ambience and draws us back again and again. Each dish is exquisitely executed subtlety combining flavour and texture that leads you in a journey of exploration. If that sounds pretentious try it and tell me I’m wrong.

Nothing. We come back again and again, sometimes with family but mostly on our own for the peace. We come to enjoy quiet times reading and exploring the local walks and then to luxuriate with a soak in the bath in anticipation of the meal to come. In a rural village there isn’t blistering internet but somewhat disappointingly we have noticed it’s getting better.

Quaint country house, a little dated but still a truly, a wonderful place to stay; nice setting, well-kept gardens, off-road parking. The jewel in this hotel is undoubtedly the staff. Went beyond the call of duty to make most dishes available to my coeliac wife's requirements. And the food! This chef is top of his class, and well beyond what you might expect at a small country house that is privately owned. I would go as far as to say his food is exceptional. Standard of cleanliness is excellent. Good jumping-off point for anything west-country related; we toured Exmoor and Dartmoor and associated coasts on our spare days.

if I "HAD" to complain about anything - the Shower flow. That's literally my only complaint - but it is an old house, so you have to expect the odd idiosyncrasy. Nothing else was a problem; the house is old, the floorboards creek a little, but everything else was up to the standard. A bell on the desk would have been useful.

A small boutique style hotel. Beautiful dining rooms and a well stocked bar. Wonderful gardens with peacocks. The food was very good, in fact excellent.

Unfortunately, our room was in an out building which was a little damp with a few wood lice for company, this was mostly caused by a leaking shower screen. Wifi didn’t reach us away from the main building, perhaps an extender would solve the issue. But on the whole, it was a nice well decorated large room.

From the moment we pull into the car park we new we were going to like the Farthings. The grounds are manicured and reflect the care that has been taken to make our stay so enjoyable. We were greeted by staff who were friendly and interested in use - not as a commodity or even the scripted and fained routine of more commercial places and I’m glad to say this attitude of helpfulness and care continued through our stay. Our room was large and yet cosy and spotlessly clean with not a hint of dust or trace that anyone else had been there. Our window looked out onto the front with the road and then the village green and hills in the distance. We like to sleep with the windows open so at first were concerned that we would be disturbed by traffic noise but it’s not a busy road and it seems that all traffic stops after about 9.30. Further exploration of the grounds revealed a well maintenance cottage garden full of seasonal fruit and veg and chickens, geese and a host of other animals. Now to the piece de resistance - the food. The attention to design, taste and detail so evident in the rest of the hotel and gardens culminates in the food. The menus are well thought through and every plate is beautifully presented with each component part complimenting and enhancing its neighbour. Each bite oozes personality and if, as we managed to do, you take your time your nose and pallet will be rewarded sometimes with explosions and other times more subtle experiences that linger and turn into smiles. In essence the Farthings is run as hotels should be - would we go again or recommend it to friends - not arf

I’m not entirely sure this is a good or bad thing but the internet isn’t city fast

Very pretty house with a lovely garden. The interior has been decorated very nicely. Very good choice of breakfast from a menu, not a buffet, which is a treat. We didn’t eat dinner there as we were visiting family but we know the restaurant is good from previous visits. The road is quiet at night.

Would have given full ten marks if it weren’t for the bed. Too small for two full sized adults and way too soft, and also the shower had really feeble water pressure. Shame as it was a lovely room.

Dog-friendly beautiful building with gardens. Fabulous restaurant with reasonably priced food and wine. Great breakfast options, comfy bed, large room, separate bath and shower. Really super staff.

The only negative was the lack of wifi in the room (for watching a movie as the TV only had terrestrial channels). Downloading to my phone from the corridor worked but was slow and I felt a bit silly.

A very quiet, relaxed environment. We stayed for 4 nights in one of the central rooms in the hotel with our 8 year old spaniel (I say room - they are actually more like suites. Much larger and more homely than average hotel rooms). At first, our dog was a little bemused by the little noises coming from the chickens and ducks in the courtyard below our our window, but got used to being woken up by the cockerel over the next couple of mornings. The village green directly opposite provided a large area to exercise our dog and gives access to some short walks around the village. At first glance, the restaurant menu looked pricey, but the meals were lovely and well worth it. Staff were very friendly and were able to suggest a couple of good locations for trips out. The hotel's location is handy for the motorway (when it's clear!) and A538 which enabled us to get to the south and north coasts easily for day trips.

Soundproofing - Very creaky floorboards and noisy doors!
