Bell by Greene King Inns

This hotel needs some TLC it's dated, but it's in the middle of town with parking. The rooms are large, comfy beds and linen, spotlessly clean and lovely and warm in fact the whole hotel was warm considering the size of the building. Evening meal was great my partner is French so can be fussy, as was the breakfast. Staff very friendly. I red the reviews before we booked so was slightly worried but totally needlessly met a lovely couple from the North who had been coming for years and is always well treated. I find the previous reviews to be pretty mean tbh and think people expect too much, imo £127 for 2 nights 2 people including breakfast I found it very reasonable, also a friendly small pub on site. Lovely stay thank you.

The only thing I found a tad boring was breakfast finished at 9 could possibly be a little later.

Good location, room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Although was busy with Christmas parties they still found us a table for evening meal, was infomed in advance there maybe a wait but our meals come quicker than expected and was excellent. Most staff where friendly and helpful. Given it was weekend before Christmas it wasn't noisy at night.

Unfortunately breakfast was a let down both days. Day 1,no clean tables, my eggs benedict had hard eggs and cold sauce, hubby had no black pudding or tomato and again hard poached eggs. Young waiting staff that maybe need training. Day 2 although we both asked for runny eggs they was hard again, hubby's breakfast was OK apart from efrom I left my eggs benefict, neither day was we asked if everything was OK and there wasn't staff around to talk too. Rest of staff where great. Shower in bathroom wasn't adjustable so difficult to shower without getting hair wet.

Dog friendly, staff vey helpful. comfortable bed and slept very well! Love the dog menu and felt very welcome with my dog. Being a staffordshire bull terrier, people can be scared of him and we have been denied entry to other establishments due to his breed. I didnt once fell uncomfortable and this means a lot! I also felt safe being a lone female traveller.

food- Mac & cheese was really nice but the salt & pepper squid was mushy and not value for money for the portion size in my opinion, even as a starter Id have expected more as the pieces were very small.. The room was very warm, the whole place was but the room esp so. I couldnt see if I could turn it off (and I didnt ask to be fair) but being on the first floor I could open the window. This is a personal preference tho...some people like it very warm.

Room was spacious and comfortable. Good lighting (not always the case in hotels, in my experience) and plenty of power sockets. Room was away from bar and restaurant events (as I had requested.) Room heating controls easy to manage. Breakfast (included) very good, plenty of choice.

Water took so long to come through hot (5 minutes or so!) that the first night I thought I could only get a lukewarm shower. Old building, maybe this can't be improved? Continuous noise from above in early hours - staff accommodation? (Rats?) Restaurant - by Wednesday had run out of some dishes, Friday no improvement.

Quaint old hotel with lots of charm. In tow center of Thetford literally across the street from Thomas Payne’s statue. This place exudes old English history from its mortar. The staff were exceptional! They even had a fan in the room!

We travel with handicaps and going up and down flights of stairs is a problem especially dragging luggage behind. However, the staff were very kind and carried our two big bags up for us. Had a bit of trouble getting the cold water to work in the shower.

Lovely breakfasts and very sweet ladies serving it. In the one evening meal I had, the lid of my chicken and hamhock pie was as hard as chipboard but the filling was good and the chipes were first rate.

well the the pie lid could have been softer but that is my only critisism. The room was comfortable, spotless and all the staff were friendly and helpful, especially when I lost my room key... the lady at the reception didn't ssem put out at all just gave me another. I appreciated that!

Breakfast was excellent, I have the eggs Benedict with excellent and plenty of smoked salmon. The breakfast waitress Linda was so nice and friendly I would gladly say the best waitress I have ever met. What a really nice lady she is. A great asset to the hotel. In fact all the staff I met from the receptionist to the cleaning lady and not forgetting the bar man couldn’t have been nicer. The room was spotless, large and very well equipped with a beautiful very comfortable four poster bed. The hotel is five to six hundred years old and full of character. I honestly wouldn’t change one single thing. I have been fortunate to have traveled to 106 countries multiple times and I have stayed in many a super hotel. However this gem in my book tops the lot as it is full to the brim of character, ambiance and most of all wonderful wonderful staff. I wish it was in my neighbourhood as without doubt I would be their best customer. Well done to all and a big thank you so much. PS: To top it off, on the morning of my departure I met two other guests in the bedroom hallway with their lovely dog. This hotel is dog friendly and I am probably one of the biggest dog lovers that you will ever meet.

Nothing whatsoever, I wouldn’t change one single detail.

stayed here every time i work in the area but never again

friday night there was a function on all windows down stairs open as it was warm music very loud could not sleep i informed a member of staff and was told there was nothing they could do food normally very good buy my steak was over done and not medium and the natchos were not edible as you now make your own and they were deep fried and full of grease

We are big Dad's Army fans and the theme of this hotel, where the cast stayed while filming, was very emotional! Splendid old building, very well preserved with original features throughout. Rooms very comfortable, if a little tired especially the bathrooms which could do with a bit of redecorating. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Dining room and bar looked wonderful, although we didn't partake of them due to other commitments, but the menus looked very reasonable. All in all a very atmospheric and historically significant place, one everyone should experience if they get the chance.

Nothing to complain about. Keep doing what you're doing, it works!

Breakfast very poor, most of the cooked food was cold when being served. Still like the hotel and location and will come to stay again next year.

A wet floor in the bathroom for the complete stay due to health and safety reasons. It would be nice to have a hot full English breakfast when serving in the morning's.
