I liked the experience of staying in an old prison cell. Be aware that although two original cells were merged into one room it still felt small. But I liked it a lot. The room was very quiet, probably because of the thick walls. One night though was very hot and the fan could not cool enough. But other than that it was really comfortable. It was clean, had a kitchen (which I never used), a nice yard to relax and a common room with aircon to cool down on a hot day. Reception staff was very welcoming and helpful. Your are in a part of the Fremantle Prison so if you want to visit the prison, it is just a few steps to the entrance. Other than that, it is about 5 minutes to the center and 15 min to the station. I would rate the location as very good.

Comfy beds, and nice that each had its own bedside lamp and locker. Clean and spacious kitchen, lots of fridges and amenities in the kitchen. Obviously perfect location for doing the Fremantle prison tours which were really good too!!

Biggest issue is that there was only 1 shower and 1 toilet for a big number of rooms (some which were 6 beds, some 8 beds). If you wanted more toilets you had to walk to the kitchen and use those ones (where there were 2 more toilets and 4 showers). Really slow and temperamental WiFi in the room. Also no ovens in the kitchen. Minor things though, I would definitely stay again!

Location was great, the facilities were cleanly. I stayed in a private room. It was modest, had the essentials, and was basic and very clean. I loved the aircon, and the mattresses were surprisingly comfy. I loved the decor in the halls, including the graphics of prisoners escapes, etc. the staff were super friendly, and the guests were friendly too!

In the private rooms, the shower curtains were super frustrating to deal with and they didn’t stop water from going everywhere, as well as only having the option of overhead rain-shower heads. Also the lights in the bathroom being on a timer. There was many many many times it would go out whilst sitting or standing still, and even when in the shower if the shower curtain was drawn. That was the biggest pain point, however after a couple nights I got good at strategically timing a quick arm wave to trigger the sensor to stay on. The rooms could use more power plugs, as I travel with a sleep apnea machine, I had to sacrifice space for my other electronics and my partners devices on the other side of the bed. This could be solved with extra power boards in the private rooms.

A unique and unusual place to stay. This heritage site has been transformed into a great little hostel. It was our first time staying in a hostel, so the bar is now set very high now. It exceeded our expectations. It has a geat setup. The facilities are clean facilities. Nice well equipped community kitchen with a nice tv lounge and dining area. Showers, toilets, and laundry facilities just off this area are clean and look very new. There is lots of outdoor space. A lovely, unexpected touch was the free pancakes on Sunday cooked by a very nice lady. The cell rooms were clean and comfortable. There was more than enough room with a little table and stool to pop your things on. The bunk bed was comfortable, and there was an added bonus of a little heater. Bedding and towel were included, don'tforgetyou toiletries!. Our cell block B had a toilet and shower on the same floor, plus an additional one at the bottom of the stairs. There are a few information boards around with some facts regarding the prison and prisoners, which is a nice touch. This is in a perfect location right next door to the prison museum entrance, which is behind the iconic Freo markets. This is about a 10 -15 minute walk from the train station. Be aware that you have to pay for parking which isn't cheap. We opted to take the train, which was convenient. There is also a big IGA across the road from the markets to get all your essentials. All the staff we encountered were friendly. I would definitely recommend staying here, if only like us it was for 1 night to have the experience of staying in a heritage prison .

The staff were very nice. There are posters on the walls with prisoner descriptions, which we found very interesting. It has a great location, close to restaurants, IGA, mini golf, chemists, harbour (B Shed to Rottnest), and the train station - you can be in Perth centre in about 30 min cheaply if you buy the daily ticket.

On our first night (Saturday), there was a drunk guy yelling downstairs around 1 am, looking for a fight. Some people in our corridor were also blasting music around the same time. A lot of people seem to use this place because it is close to restaurants and bars. If you can choose, pick a less busy night to stay over. Also the staff is only there 9 am to 9 pm.

The concept/atmosphere is great whilst also being a tidy and easy to navigate place to stay. The "Quad plus 2" room would be good for a young family, as a couple it was sufficient and very clean, with use of sustainable products and practices. Great common areas, pancakes on sundays! and both staff members I dealt with were lovely. Best part about YHA Freo Prison is location. Heart of Fremantle practically on the doorstep so perfect for an activity filled weekend.

Would have liked late check out option Forbidding of alcoholic drinks on premises not ideal

It's very nice place to stay, very spacious common areas, where you can sit outside or in one of the common rooms. Friendly staff, some part of the complex looks like it used to be before, some buildings are new. We had a private room, and was very quiet (it's in the end of the block) and comfortable. Huge kitchen and storage. Perfect location, plus Fremantle is a beautiful town!

Kitchen and dining tables were quite dirty, but it was mostly because of many people actually live in the hostel, so in the evening it gets full as everyone is back and cooking and not everyone clean after themselves.. other then this it was really good :)

the bathroom facilities were very good, shower was a good temperature. a good crowd of people staying - felt very safe. lots of social areas to either work or chat with people. has lots of books and sports equipment which you can use at your leisure. it was also cool to stay in a prison - lots of information signs around the hostel telling interesting stories

kitchen / dining room smells a bit but when ppl are cooking that's inevitable.

The staff were great, so friendly and helpful with recommendations of the area, places to eat etc. Tons of break out areas, cool interiors/exteriors and located next to the prison you can visit for the day. Free sunscreen, and drinks to buy, as well as the free breakfast pancakes were all nice extra touches and not expected. Great location, close to the Fremantle markets, coffee shops, restaurants, Little Creatures brewery.

The bedroom door of my dorm was stiff and needed to be slammed shut to properly close it - not appreciated by the sleeping guests in the dorm room I’m sure. Few toilets and shower facilities for the number of guests. I wanted to use the female shower at 9am on a Sunday morning and it was closed off for cleaning so I had to use a mixed bathroom/shower wet room and it wasn’t the most pleasant experience, very small, no proper ventilation. I had used the female shower room the night before though and it was great - spacious, clean, fully functional.

This location was convenient for the Rottnest ferry, the staff was very helpful. There were a lot of different spaces to be outside or working at a table. The air conditioning in the rooms worked well. Fremantle is a cool area to explore, the price allowed for a local stay for a reasonable price for Australia.

The bathrooms in our section didn't have any tables or shelves, so I had to put my things on the floor while getting ready, which felt unsanitary. (There were no tables or mirrors in the room, so you have to use the bathroom.) The kitchen has plenty of fridge space, but no freezers at all. With 6 people in a room, the night owls would come in, then the morning tour people would get up...there wasn't much uninterrupted sleep.
