Excellent service and helpful staff. Check in was efficient and everyone helpful getting us a nice table in the bar to meet family. Breakfast was comprehensive with polite table service. Room had good amenities and was well stocked. By far the best hotel we've stayed in for a long time.

Nothing that would put me off staying again. Perhaps the carpet in one of our rooms was a little tired but purely cosmetic and I'm being really picky just to find something.

Nothing to do with the hotel but pre-book a taxi if you are going out. We tried to get one at 18:30 on a Saturday but nothing available until 20:00.

We enjoyed sitting on the terrace with the backdrop of the beautiful bow windows. The waiting staff were very pleasant and we enjoyed our light supper.

The carpet in our room was very old and stained in places but I understand it was due to be replaced within a few days. in general we liked the decor but we did feel

The hotel is in a very convenient location just 5mins walk to the centre of town and a couple of minutes to Firstsite visual arts centre. There's a beautiful park nearby and Colchester Castle. The hotel is beautifully decorated and the rooms spacious with comfortable beds. Bathrooms are especially lovely with marble tiles and great showers.

The restaurant is lovely with attractive art deco windows and decoration. Breakfast was generally good but bacon not great, tough and hard and the toast sliced bread a bit disappointing. Some good free range bacon and some sourdough toast would be great!

We were upgraded and had a very spacious and comfortable room with a lovely big bathroom. The complimentary mini bar was a nice touch and we appreciated having fresh milk in the fridge to use when making tea. A lovely well maintained old building right in the centre of Colchester. The reception and dining room staff were all very pleasant and helpful.

We appeared to be the only people using the dining room for dinner (it may well have been due to the fact it was a Tuesday and second week of September). This did not fill us with confidence. However the food was OK but we felt the fillet steak was spoilt by too much salt, and what was described as a shallot was half a good sized onion and not totally cooked through.

The air conditioning in the room was excellent. The staff at breakfast were exemplary, couldn’t fault anything. They greeted us as we entered the room, explained the process for ordering and nothing was too much trouble. We had a few different choices of breakfast & all were well presented and delicious so well done also to the kitchen staff. The room was spotlessly clean. There was ample car parking.

The reception staff could have been more welcoming. The view from the room wasn’t good - an internal courtyard containing what looked the a boiler room. The second room had no view as there was film over the window. The lack of an occasional chair in the room..

I was upgraded and ended up in a suite!!! Right from when you enter this hotel you know this is excellent. Staff are professionell, friendly, helpful. The room was huge and so was the bathroom which had a bath tub and a shower and two sinks. The room has big wardrobes, a fridge, kettle, espresso machine and a big comfortable bed. As the hotel is in a historical building it has a certain charm which is emphasized by the tasteful interior design. There is a beautiful restaurant and bar in the hotel as well with extremely professionell and helpful staff. Parking is enclosed and free. The hotel is a 5 minute walk away from Colchester main street which is great. Fantastic starting point to explore Colchester and surroundings. It is close enough to Harwich ferry terminal (30 minute drive) if you need to arrange accommodation regarding ferry travel. Unfortunately I had to leave early and could not have breakfast but I am sure that is great , too!

The hotel certainly lived up to the reviews seen online. and our own previous knowledge of what to expect. Excellent location for the places of interest and City centre, and ample parking on site. The whole experience of our stay there was excellent in every way including the very special afternoon tea, where a guest came to join us and her visual impairment and dietary needs were accounted for. From the friendly efficient welcome through the well furnished room and included amenities to the fine catering we ckecked out at the end of our stay very satisfied with our experience and would certainly stay again and also recommend the hotel to others as a very good place to stay.

What a nights sleep ..... beds are divine. Rooms are spacious and very well equipped. Bathrooms are lovely. Breakfast was gorgeous. Location is perfection ... within close walking distance of Colchester Town Centre, seeped in history with fabulous shops and Fenwicks !! You don't hear the traffic. Can't recommend highly enough.

Breakfast .... food was delicious, however sparse butter, toast for two mornings running was barely toasted. No coffee or tea in pots, kept having to ask for re-fills which was met with funny looks, as if we were exceeding an invisible coffee allocation !!
