As a solo traveler, I really enjoyed the vibe in the house. It has more of a family vibe than just a hostel. They offer dinner option at the house every night for 1000 yen only, which saves a lot of time and energy as well as you can have the chance to talk to people and had a great time together. Although it isn't located in a walking distance from the resorts, they provide shuttle buses every morning and evening. Last but not least, the owner, Gaspard, is so helpful and kind!!! He literally solve all my needs when I was in town. I will definitely miss this place and would love to come back again!

The Bohemian Shelter was the perfect hostel for my solo trip to the snow. All of the staff went over and above- to create a warm and friendly environment and made it easy to hit various mountains each day. I unfortunately had to go to hospital one day (with a snowboarding injury) and Gaspard took me there himself, waiting until I was discharged. For anyone wanting an affordable, hostel style, snow trip- I would highly recommend.

Everything. From Gaspards hospitality to his organisation, everything is easy, smooth and streamlined. Multiple shuttles to either the main bus terminal (where all the busses to the resorts go from), or if there's a bunch of people going to a close resort, you get dropped to the door. Awesome.

Gaspard doesn't swing in the other direction, if you know what I mean. Also, it's not apparent by just looking at google maps, but the house is on the top of quite a large hill. Walking from town to Bohemian isn't a thing (I mean, you can, but taxi is the way to go (or 50 beers)). Gas will also give you a lift if it's organised in advance and not winged.

Gaspard the owner/operator is fantastic! Great guy and very knowledgable about Hakuba. His backpackers lodge is great fun. Would definitely recommend this to people travelling to Hakuba. Great opportunities to socialise and meet new people! Liam and Bianca the staff were also very helpful and great fun.

It was a little far out of Hakuba, but still walkable if you're committed! Regardless it's not a huge issue as Gaspard runs multiple shuttles on a regular basis, and you can arrange individual pick ups for a small fee.

It's a wonderful hostel for anyone wanting to visit Hakuba. We had a private room with a comfortable queen bed. The room was big enough to organize the luggages and clothes on the rack. There is a dry room for the snow gear. The best part about this hostel is a family feeling it instantly creates, it feels like you're just having a ski weekend with your cousins! Gaspard, the owner, is the sweetest and most kind and helpful person! He is also a well of knowledge about backcountry skiing, places to eat, and anything else you'd need to know during your stay. Although the hostel is not walking distance from the slopes, Gaspard has a convenient system for dropping people off and picking them up (for free) at the shuttle bus stops for all of the Hakuba resorts. He also can pick you up / drop off at the train/bus station when you arrive/depart (also for free), and you can join him for a supermarket run if needed. He offers very affordable (cheaper than a taxi service) additional transportation services as well (e.g. if you want to go to onsen or grab dinner/drinks in the town), as well as optional dinner, beer on tap, and laundry services. People in the hostel usually hang out in the common area, chat or play games after dinner, but it gets quiet at 10pm as everyone is trying to hit the slopes early in the morning (or if they want to continue hanging out, they usually go out, to keep it quiet). So you can socialize if you want but also you'll be able to rest well. You can use the common kitchen and fridge to store or make your own food. There is one big shower and 2 bathrooms, but somehow we never had to wait for either.

Key for the room or some safe storage for the valuables would be a plus.

Chilled out atmosphere, with interesting guests from around the world and an extremely helpful host in Gaspard who offers lifts into town at multiple times throughout the day and an in-house chef cooking up delicious dinners daily.

The house is a little bit of a walk from the downtown area (although many shuttles and taxis are available) - if you dont mind a cool walk in nature then it's fine but you should be aware that it can be quite hard in heavy snows.

Cute property. Amazing, fun and wonderful staff. If you enjoy hanging out, talking to new people, and having a good time. This is the place for you!

The location was a bit far from local shops, however Gaspard had a very good system with regards to pick ups, drop offs, and grocery shopping runs so considering that there were no issues at all. I just like to go for random walks around town, but because of the location, it was difficult to do so. Otherwise I loved my stay at The Bohemians' Shelter.

Incredible value for money and probably the best place I stayed while in Japan. Everything at the Bohemians' Shelter is well thought out and ran. Absolute gem of a place to stay and the owner Gaspard is a big part of the great experience. Entertaining and thoughtful while also being an incredible resource for any questions about the Hakuba valley area.

Ski in ski out is always best but it would be impossible with how all the Hakuba resorts are laid out. The shuttle system at Bohemian's Shelter works great and gives you lots of flexibility and options for each day.

The staff are INCREDIBLE. Gaspard and crew went above and beyond for the entirety of the trip to ensure that we had a wonderful time. Including going so far as to drive us back and forth from town to ensure that we were able to eat at restaurants/enjoy our time in Hakuba. And the family dinners at the hostel are unlike any experience I've ever had in a sharehouse. Visited for the holidays and the the staff managed to create a familial atmosphere when we were all so far away from our own families. Highly recommend.

The only unfortunate part of this hostel is its distance from everything. Certainly not an inhibiting factor since Gaspard is willing to go the extra mile to drive you around, but few things are within walking distance. Additionally, if you are looking for a solitary hostel experience where you don't talk to anyone, I would not recommend this hostel.

Gaspard was by far the most accommodating host we have ever stayed with! He truly makes your stay feel like a home away from home. Shuttle services were timely and flexible, dinners were impeccable and the room was clean and simple with a great view of the mountains. Due to our flights being changed by the airline we arrived a day later than planned and were graciously reimbursed for the day we missed! Also a special thank you to Roei and Gaspard for making last minute changes to dinners to adjust for vegetarian options. I cannot thank Gaspard enough for being such an incredibly lovely and thoughtful host and we will not be staying anywhere but The Bohemians’ Shelter when we travel to Hakuba next.
