Borrowdale Gates Hotel

Lovely new refurbished guest room with new bathroom facilities. Breakfast was excellent! Very fresh and substantial variety. Poached eggs perfect! Fried breakfast really good and tasty! considering I am gluten free. Much appreciated.thank you. Lovely to watch the birds feeding thru the window at breakfast time!!

Unfortunately the bath mat was old and mouldy so pointed this out to staff and this was quickly rectified with a replacement new bath mat. Then they had a problem with losing the gas supply on the evening and following morning, but this didn't really worry us we still had a good breakfast and they did everything they could to please us, and we appreciated this under the circumstances.

This is a fantastic hotel. Situated in a quiet part of the Lakes far from the crowds - the rooms, lounge and restaurant have superb views over the fields, mountains, and nearby village. Our room was very spacious and very comfortable. There is heaps of room to make yourself comfortable in the lounge and bar. The restaurant was outstanding, offering thoughtfully designed dishes meeting the quality of much more expensive offerings elsewhere. Breakfast was also excellent. Staff were very helpful throughout our stay. Would happily stay again!

This hotel exceeded our expectations so there isn't much negative to say. I imagine in busy times the car park might be a bit difficult to navigate, and there are very narrow streets leading up to the hotel.

Location and food for breakfast and evening meals The issues we had were dealt with by staff . We could get a bus directly outside hotel and go to Buttermere. We could walk to another bus stop to go to Keswick to avoid taking the car . We could do several walks direct from the hotel in Borrowdale . It was calm and relaxing . We will go back again for another Anniversary. The dining rooms , sitting rooms and garden rooms were lovely.

Room 22 The size and noise from the kitchen fans . The window looked onto a roof . Only one window. It was a very warm room . I don’t think the room matched the price we paid . It was disappointing. When coming down to dinner there seemed to be shortage of staff . There wasn’t a proper welcome . We weren’t sure what to do . A meet and greet would have helped.

The hotel is in a lovely location and has a very pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. Without exception, the staff were pleasant and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was excellent and we enjoyed sitting in the restaurant looking out over the gardens and towards Derwent Water. We were unable to take advantage of the fine dining experience on Saturday night, as we were out of the hotel very early the following morning to support a competitor in the Lakesman Triathlon, starting at 06:00. Staff gave us clear directions to exit the hotel before it would be opened up, and we returned for breakfast and checkout later in the morning. We'd like to return for a more 'relaxed' stay in the future.

Hard to fault this hotel, in our experience. Room was comfortable and the setting is lovely. Very peaceful. Staff were great.

Everything about this hotel was exceptional. The customer service we received was second to none and Sue and her colleagues go above and beyond and it is very clear to see. The location is perfect for exploring the surroundings of Borrowdale and Keswick just being a short distance away. We got upgraded to a superior room with the most fantastic views that truly made my partners birthday weekend so special and it was such a lovely gesture from Sue and her colleagues. The breakfast was brilliant and has plenty to offer both hot and cold options. The facilities were fantastic and I have already been recommending this hotel to family and friends and will absolutely be coming back to stay soon. Thank you so much for making our weekend amazing, we loved every minute.

Nothing could have been better

As soon as we arrived the manager Sue made us feel special and welcomed. The food was superb (one of us coeliac, one of us pescatarian), the restaurant service like a well oiled machine. It was our first visit and we were upgraded to a garden suite room which was recently refurbished and superb. bed was v. comfortable, room was quiet, heating controls were simple but effective. Great to be able to step into the garden from it and watch the squirrels. Relaxing lounge areas. Great to be able to do lovely walks from the door. We will return!

Absolutely nothing

Wonderful location, beautiful views, walks possible from right outside the hotel. Lovely dining room / lounge and excellent quality of food, fabulous breakfast. Exceptionally good staff.

Surprised that there were no vegetarian main course options on the dinner menu, and also no vegetarian full breakfast offered, although there were other veggie breakfast options such as eggs and porridge. Advise asking ahead if you are vegetarian or vegan. If I'm being picky, the shower could have been better, it was badly angled over the bath, but this wasn't really a problem for us.

This is a very well run hotel, the staff are superb here. It's clear that a lot of thought and care is taken throughout. They are attentive and excel in supporting you, but are also respectful of your privacy. They understand people :) !! We had a short stay, but a very memorable one - and the staff and location were the stars of the show. You get to know them a little and they all add to the charm. If calm and quiet is what you are after, this location will give you just that, especially for a lake this size. We spent a few hours in Windermere too and it was much more bustling/touristy (went on a cruise in bowness). The food service is exceptional, we can't get over it. This is also a highlight of staying at this particular hotel. Again, so much care is taken and it simply speaks for itself. Like us, we are pretty sure everyone loves this little gem and really look forward to coming back.

We liked everything! Oh my our room was so beautifully decorated it was like home from home, quiet, peaceful and stunning views. The food was equally amazing. We stayed for the evening dinner and it was definitely a culinary delight! The waiting staff were equally as wonderful although I cant recall names I did recognise Scottish accent and Northumberland tone, thankyou both it was lovely speaking with you! I would recommend this hotel and without any doubts ..
