Selkirk Arms Hotel

We were In Kirkcudbright to "find" my husband's ancestors; we were successful!! The hotel was exactly what we needed....within walking distance of the entire town and the cemetery(!!!) And it was exactly what we like...not a big chain hotel..it was clean, safe and within walking distance of everything. We had to take a taxi from Dumfries(abouth$45) as we arrived there from Glascow by train. We booked the taxi well in advance from the USA ; upon arrival call to double check return reservation The rooms were smaller but had all we needed as we are out and about most of the day!!Breakfast was included in its hotel dining room. They also served dinners at your own expense and they seemed to bring in a lot of people who like a bit "fancier" dinner selections. There is a lovely courtyard you can sit in and I believe they serve alcoholic drinks/soft drinks all day. The town has an "artsy" flavor to it nowadays and was having an art festival(July). The people at the desk were very friendly and helpful. Take note: there is no elevator so you lug your luggage up the stairs. As I said quaint over "chain" hotel! I heard them on the phone having to decline requests for reservations so I think they operate on a full booking schedule; to be safe, I would make reservations ahead of time.

Breakfast was lovely, and there was a great choice on the breakfast menu, full Scottish , kippers and eggs we could choice what we wanted, Staff were very very friendly, The room was spacious and very clean, We had a lovely evening meal, and again a lovely menu, and also the days specials to choice from. But what a Really loved was the kindness of the staff, and the infos every morning on the menu... ie: Tide Times and a daily walk route, brilliant idea , I have been to many hotels but this little details was fantasic

The only very little of feedback which I would like to give to the selkrik arms apart from keep up the great work is, I think you may have a probelm with the plumbing, as we heard a loud noise in the morning and the evenings, we think it might have been the plumbing /Shower -WC coming from the room above, but this is not a complitiant just my point of view and I know the lovely staff at Selkrik Arms will look at this.. ,

Every single member of staff were amazing- very friendly and efficient and couldn’t do enough to ensure that our stay was enjoyable. All the food was lovely - we had breakfast every morning and dinner three times during our stay and each meal was beautiful. Our rooms was a good size, well decorated and the bathroom was fairly newly modernised with both a bath and a shower. We have stayed in “posher “ places (very occasionally) but have never felt more welcomed or comfortable in any previous hotel. We really cannot recommend the Selkirk Arms highly enough

While Kirkcudbright is a pleasant, picturesque little town it hasn’t quite got it’s act together to cater properly to the fairly large number of visitors within the town. Many places closed up to two days a week when one would have assumed that they would make hay while the sun shines during summer. For example one bar/ restaurant closed completely from approximately 6pm on one day because they were having a staff night out! However the surrounding countryside is beautiful with lots of lovely wee villages to visit and a beautiful coastline.

There was much to like about this particular establishment , a very pleasant welcome , our room request was complied with being aoffered a very comfortable in the cottage. Thoroughly enjoyed Dinner served by very pleasant and attentive staff. A bonus in view of the weather was the outside space to enjoy a drink. So in all a very enjoyable break that we will pobably repeat and recommend to others.

A couple of very monor issues that we were referred and will no doubt be dealt with.

The breakfast was excellent. Lovely selection, beautifully presented and beautifully cooked breakfast. Excellent service too. Willie was perfect serving us in such a gracious, polite and professional manner.

Our accommodation and the general areas were very comfortable, clean and beautifully appointed with gorgeous touches to detail e,g, the gorgeous modern design elements like the Scottish Thistle design on some of the wall paper and curtains in the residents lounge.

All the staff at the Selkirk Arms were exceptional - they were warm, friendly and went above and beyond to meet our needs. The stargazing tour at the bay was incredible, with rum and hot chocolate, and the food both for dinner and breakfast was perfect. Nice varied menu, delicious meals and a beautiful place to stay. The bed was super-comfy. Couldn't rate it more highly - can't wait to go back. Thank you to everyone who works there - you work incredibly hard to provide a wonderful service.

Lovely welcoming staff in a very well run hotel. A Tardis from the front as it looks like a small townhouse but there are lots of rooms and a restaurant and a nice well kept garden garden at the back. Set in the middle of what feels like a village but which is a small town. Incredibly friendly nice helpful staff who really care about what they do. We unexpectedly were given a suite with a sitting room which was a nice bonus. Rooms are very clean and plain in grey and white. Nice meal and wine and lovely walk in Kircudbright down to the port. Very nice calm place. We stayed with our dog but their dog policy may have changed so worth checking whether you can bring your dog if you are eating at this hotel.

Room; very comfortable bed. Quiet at night, spotless bathroom Dinner; excellent choice of meals and everything we chose was perfectly cooked Staff; very friendly and helpful Breakfast; good coffee and good food choices.

There seemed to be a single light switch for the lamps in the bedroom on one side of the bed, which was a bit awkward . I really can’t think of anything else

Comfortable room and excellent restaurant. Helpful staff who took care of our bags as we arrived early by bus. Even though it was July it was good that the central heating was available as the weather could be cool and wet. Useful information about local walks at reception.

Sash windows in the room were hard to open and close.

The hotel is very traditional, old building with character and charming good sized garden area. The staff were incredibly professional and friendly. Food was fantastic, both at dinner and breakfast, great quality and presentation.

My only issue was noise from guest room above mine in the cottage annexe. I do appreciate it is an incredibly old building and therefore sound proofing not great but think the guests were insomniacs, continually bouncing around floor throughout the night!!
