Russell Hotel

The location suited us perfectly. it was easy to find as we came up London Road, and the car park at the back was a real bonus. Going down the side road led us straight to the pedestrianised shopping area & our choice of Bills restaurant for supper - many other choices available. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. We appreciated the choices for breakfast, & the availability of vegetarian sausage. The bar & lounge looked welcoming & the receptionist was pleasant and efficient. Excellent value for money.

Great location. One street back from the high street. Wonderful breakfast with lots of choice. Fresh smelling bedding and towels. Lovely big room (No.47). Heating on, lovely and warm. Free car parking at the back of the hotel.

Thick dust on wall lights above the bed, door frames and bathroom light. Dusty sock found behind bathroom radiator. Argumentative guests at breakfast (one of them stated she had called the police to the hotel the previous night) who we suspected were paid for by the DHSS. They were obviously 'down & out' types and referred to the staff by name. One member of staff brought one man a black bag containing his belongings and reminded him to pay before he left.

Twin room was fine albeit a little dated. Location was fabulous - easy to walk into town etc. Having parking on site was a big bonus in such a busy place. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Breakfast was adequate

A little dated but then you get what you pay for. Breakfast choice limited - cooked breakfast was fine but fruit would have been nice as would some pastries.

This was a great find, the hotel is as close to the city centre and all the attractions as it can be. Car parking off the road. Nice staff who could not be more kind and more helpful. Very good breakfast, loved the caffetière coffee and the prompt service. The room was huge, clean and airy, but dated, anyway this adds to the charm as the hotel is old. Strong wifi and smart tv, we watched Netflix just like home. 5 stars for the price and quality.

Convenient location about a ten minute walk from railway station, pleasant situation opposite the common. Easy check-in, friendly receptionist. Comfortable twin bed room (although single would have sufficed), all usual facilities provided. Superb full breakfast, and plenty of choice, available nice and early (from 0700!).

Nothing of note on such a short stay (one night), more than happy with everything. Views from the rooms at the front of the hotel are probably more scenic.

All of the staff were very helpful and when I arrived way to early went out of there way to be accommodating. I had a single room which was fine for my needs as I wasn’t planning to spend much time in it. Breakfast was freshly cooked, hot and of good quality, the serving staff were friendly. Room was pretty quiet I slept with the window open which was fine. I will stay there again. Great location for the town centre.

Breakfast was simple, but freshly cooked and really nice. Plenty of hanging storage in the room. Kitchenette in the annexe room was a real bonus. Location was great for exploring the town. It’s a lovely period building too.

The decor was a little dated, but perfectly fine. We could have done with some drawers, but that’s a really minor issue.

Staff were very friendly and dealt with special request for a fridge. In fact we had a small kitchen, toaster, microwave, plates etc. Lovely full English breakfast plenty to eat and good quality. worth going for the breakfast. Free parking on site and we even could leave our car after check out for a while to go back into town. Very close to town just a few hundred meters.

Having read some awful reviews after already having paid for our booking, we feared we had made a big mistake. Not so! We arrived earlier than the usual check-in time and were able to go to our room straight away, which was really nice. Staff were generally very friendly and helpful. The room in the annexe was lovely, big and bright with a sofa and a kitchenette, plenty of storage, a comfortable bed and a lovely big ensuite bathroom which looked very new. It had a smart freestanding bath, a great shower, bags of hot water and the whole room was squeaky clean. Could not fault it. No, it is not a posh hotel but it is fabulous value for money. Added bonus, the walk from the hotel to the town centre is less than 5 minutes straight down the road. Close enough to pop back and drop off any shopping or put up your feet for a bit before setting off again. Lots of nice cafes and eateries within a 5 to 10 minute walk. Breakfast was adequate. Not the best we have had over the years but again, good enough in our opinion.

We stayed for 2 nights. The first day breakfast was a Sunday and was a bit of a shambles. The food was fine but the service not great. Much better on the Monday morning so I assume that it is not the usual team serving at weekends. Would have liked to have a hairdryer in the room - I expect you need to ask for this but would have been nice if reception offered this when checking in. The bathroom has no window and would benefit from an extractor fan.

The staff were all friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very good - freshly cooked and a wide choice. It was a short walk to the town and lots of restaurants.

The building needed some attention. A lot of the woodwork needed painting.
