The staff was incredibly attentive, and many spoke English quite well. Meals were an impressive experience. It was fun for our family to dress up in the provided yukatas for dinner. The location was great, and the staff offered free shuttle rides as well. Balcony was nice.

The women's onsen didn't have as many facilities as the men's (based on conversation with my husband). If you are tall (over 5' 11" / 180 cm), you will have to duck through all the doorways in the room.

Location and and the staffs are really helpful.

The checkin time 3:00 PM and the checkout 10 AM and they charge 2,000 yen for an hour for late checkout. I think this is a ripe off to customer.

Staying in this ryokan was an amazing experience. The room was clean and beautiful, with the tatami floor and some decorations. In the room is included a kimono and a matcha tea, so you can relax and immerse yourself in the traditional japanese experience. The view from the windows was stunning! with the river, the red bridge and the sakura tree, it seemed like a living painting. In my booking it was included a traditional dinner and breakfast, they were served in a private room with a member of the staff explaining the various dishes. I really liked the dinner, the breakfast was a bit weird for my taste.

When eating the dinner and the breakfast, the waiter spoke only japanese so we didn't understand much, only after a while an english speaking waiter was assigned to our table so we could understand him.

-the hotel fetched us to and from the bus terminal. They also sent us to pick up out rental car after we checked out. very personal service. -great onsen in a hundred years old meiji house. many amenities like body scrub, facial scrub and the usual body shampoo and conditioner. -great dinner, with delicate and cute tablewares. nice hida beef. -nice view of the river -less than 5 mins walk to one of the morning markets and old government museum. -about 5mins walk to old town

-the towels provided were prickly and thin. Does not match the classy image of the hotel. -dinner was served in the private room, not in our room anymore. We were very very unlucky to be in the room next to a partying multi-generation japanese family. A bit shock to hear loud voices throughout our dinner so much as that we could not talk without raising our voice. and children hitting on the paper wall several times. We tolerated through the dinner but feedback to the hotel. Then next morning, we had our breakfast besides the same group again. It really destroy the atmosphere of our meals. -The feel of the hotel is very japanese, but we have a Hungary staff and China staff in kimono to serve the dinner. not that we mind as that made communication easier. but it did feel a bit funny.

We had a great stay at Honjin Hiranoya Annex. The hotel is a very short walk from the Old Town district, morning markets, and located overlooking a river. The room was pretty basic, but clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The real standout staying here was the food. Our room included breakfast and dinner, and it was served in what seems to be a relatively new dining area on the 2nd floor with private dining booths. Each meal there was a treat that we thoroughly enjoyed.

My only real suggestion to the property is to have the wait staff slow down serving dinner. It seemed to rushed.

The staff are extremely friendly (and can speak English). You're treated extremely well from the moment you check in. The Kaiseki meals were absolutely out of this world and we were looking forward to each dinner throughout the whole stay. Facilities include an indoor and outdoor onsen (only for men) which were amazing as well. Additionally, the hotel is located really near the Takayama morning markets and Old Town (literally outside your window). Couldn't be more impressed!

The shower curtain was a little mouldy.

The room was a bit smaller than I expected. But it was clean. The meals were excellent. One of my colleagues was served an American breakfast, which was not good, though. Only a piece of bread and a cup of milk were served. Nonetheless, it was excellent. The public bath is a bit small.

They may serve a better American breakfast. I understand people staying at their facility expect to be served a Japanese-stayle meal for their breakfast. But, some people may want to be served an American one.

We have never felt so welcomed like we did here. Everything is perfectly designed to make you feel special, from the moment they look for you in the station to take you to the hotel, the check in experience, to how the member of the staff that accompanies you to the room to explain you everything and give you the welcoming treat. The kaiseki meals are superb, the quality and level of detail of the food and the explanation of each dish. The onsen experience was also very good, there are two onsen for male and two for females with every amenities you could need and more. There are spacious, very comfortable, well maintained and clean. Highly recommended and would repeat the stay if we go back to Takayama.

Lovely traditional onsen hotel in a beautiful location very close to the old town. We were extremely lucky to have caught the cherry blossom bloom in Takayama during our stay. The views at the bridge were stunning - day and night I loved the female onsen located on the ground floor next to the hotel - lovely Japanese design, calming and with a nice variety of Japanese tea both hot and cold, for after onsen Dinner and breakfast are set in a lovely, modern designed dining area, with individual rooms allocated Excellent customer service. The staff were very friendly and helpful

Our dinner was a little disappointing though it could be because we requested for no raw fish. The hida beef serving was quite small Breakfast was nice Dining room, service and presentations were excellent

The staff was very friendly and helpful. There was a free shuttle to the station and they served us tea everyday. They also provided a few japanese traditional outfits to wear around town and to the onsens. The views from the room were amazing and its location was great. Very close to the morning market and key sights

The place is a bit dated. You can feel this mainly in the bathroom of the room. But we enjoyed our stay
