excellent service, the staff recommended restaurant options. and booked us a taxi when the weather wasn’t great. The lounge are has complimentary refreshments and the coffee was great! We spent our downtime here rather than in our room. the Onsen that you book and use privately was lovely and relaxing after a long day walking and sightseeing.

This is our 4th hotel on a long trip through Japan, and it was the smallest room we have had. Luckily we didn’t had our large suitcases with us, only backpacks with what we needed for a short two night stay. we had our suitcases transferred onto our next hotel from our previous. If we had them with us, it would have been extremely cramped. the raised bed area only has a small lip of timber between mattress and edge to the floor, and a very narrow area between that and the wall, and one of us had a fall on the first day due to it…. we had to be very careful from then on.

It is located in the heart of tourist area.

There is NO car park near the hotel, you have to check in through the main hotel in another area then be sent by the taxi ( maybe smaller size than your car if you drive to this town) so that you have to move back-and-forth for the luggage, in order to complete your luggage loading and unloading processes for your check in and check out. i.e. You car is parked FAR away from your suite and only ONE taxi trip is provided during the check in and all the remaining TWO trips you need to go by your foot (1. after check in and parked your car, you need to walk back to your suite 2. you need to walk to the main hotel for taking back your car in order to loading back your luggage)

The Villa was amazing, perfect amount of space for a family trip- the bath and facilities were outstanding. we booked for one night and ended up staying for as long as time would allow.

Location - fantastic, easy walking to lots of lovely old buildings, cafes and restaurants. 100m from a little omikaze Staff - very welcoming, warm and helpful. They helped us secure dinner restaurants. Room - very comfortable and lovely view out the window of the falling snow. Comfy beds, comfy pillow and nice shower room. Facilities - warm relaxing lounge with free tea, coffee and games. For 1000 yen order the sparkling sake! Use the private bath- look out the window and have a nice relaxing soak after 20k steps exploring Takayama.

Only drawback was no elevator but honestly not a problem and the staff helped us with our luggage up the short flight of stairs. Don’t let this put you off staying in this lovely property.

We loved everything about the house. Initially I was concerned that we were not staying in the actual hotel but in a separate location but once we stepped inside it was perfect - super comfortable and warm, an amazing private onsen, a big comfortable and well equipped kitchen/diner with great views of the river and bridge. We could walk everywhere and were surrounded by historical areas. It was safe, super clean and we even loved the tatami room and the Japanese style beds in the second bedroom. There were so many lovely touches- beautiful robes, slippers, coffee, quality shampoos/conditioners etc. Heavenly.

Excellent location, walking distance from the JR station and Takayama Old Town. The hotel is beautiful and with the friendliest staff we’ve encountered in Japan. There is a complimentary tea and coffee bar on the ground floor with a selection of green tea. The room was well appointed and we loved the traditional timber bath room. The bath was appreciated with a good soak after so much walking! Living room area (with coffee table and TV) was a bonus. We had a gorgeous view of the internal courtyard garden from our room. The beds were generous and comfortable, with 2 pillows each. The hotel was able to hold our luggage on our final morning so we could visit the local morning markets, a short walk away.

We stayed one night at The Machiya Hotel Takayama on 13 June 2023. We were blessed to have Mr Masuta on duty that day when we arrived. We were very close to the required timing for the return of our rental car, & Mr Masuta, upon understanding our situation from the google translation text, immediately helped to carry our big & heavy backpacks from the nearby car park to the hotel. He also ensured that the air con in our room was switched on when he placed our backpacks in the room. When we returned for our check-in, he warmly welcomed us & showed us the lounge where complimentary drinks were provided as well as the location of the onsen. Through our short stay, he would answer all our queries well & with much warmth. We travel to Japan often & have stayed in numerous accommodations. It was simply refreshingly rare to meet such a warm & helpful personality like Mr Masuta in Japanese hotel industry. Many Japanese front desk staff tend to be cold, unfriendly & do not go the extra mile to help outside of their required duties. But Mr Masuta is different - his strong & warm customer service was instrumental to make our stay at the Hotel memorable & exceptional. He is indeed an asset to the Hotel!

We stayed in the beautiful self-contained hanare (villa) which is right on the river and central to everything. It is stunningly beautiful. Huge cypress bath fits the whole family! Space for luggage and clothing Zoned climate control Balcony overlooking the river and town Loads of power outlets and usb charging points Lots of natural light and super high ceilings Cleaning and towels service Private driver from check-in at hotel reception to the house

Nothing not to like but could be improved with some cleaning cloths/products in the kitchen. Somewhere to hang clothing to dry. A more comfortable seating on the balcony - images showed a couch but was just two stools.

I cannot speak too highly of the helpfulness of the staff, who go above and beyond. We arrived by car as it started to lightly rain. I am ashamed that I did not learn the name of the male receptionist/concierge who insisted on leading, on foot, while I drove, to a parking station around the corner, then showed me how to navigate the parking machine and finally accompanied me back to the hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful and serene. Our room, upstairs, was large and very comfortable. I would definitely stay here again.

Only one small thing - the air conditioning, which cannot be set to cooling. We like to sleep in a cooler room so it was necessary for us to sleep with the window open but this wasn’t an issue for us, although it might be for some people.

- very pretty place and design. Very precious and a little Japanese garden inside beautifully done. - loved the room. Modern yet Ryokan traditonal. Comfortable bed and good A/c that is adjustable. - beautiful Yukata to wear inside - good location : away from the touristy area but just 10 min walk and then 10 min walk from the station. Very quiet. - I didn’t try the bath they have, but if I had stayed longer I might have - modern shower bathroom - beautiful teas downstairs to try special ones from the region - nice sofa area in front of Japanese garden to relax (although was occupied most evenings by a group of travellers …) - staff super nice. Whilst they didn’t speak English very well, we still made it work and they are super helpful: helping me make diner reservations and Yamato transport booking super easy - they had an extra adaptor to lend me

- they have have forgotten to change drinking glasses / cups in the room the day of cleaning. No big deal, but maybe attention to detail :) - the hairdryer worked but didn’t blow hot air (?!)
