We had the most wonderful and unforgettable stay here. First time staying in a ryokan, and we were absolutely blown away by the level of hospitality and kindness we received there. They take care of everything and provide so many amenities - evening tea, origami, calligraphy, lovely private baths that you can reserve. Not to mention the Japanese breakfasts that were out of this world. Every morning was a completely different set of dishes. I don't know how the chefs manage to provide such a wide variety of high quality food. And the atmosphere is very cozy and relaxing. You really do feel like you're on vacation, even if you're out and about sightseeing all day. I would come back to Takayama just to stay here again. Thank you so much for everything!

It was my second stay at Oyado Koto No Yume. The staff was very attentive and always supportive, going above and beyond to help us. They even arranged the Ta-Q-Bin service for us. The breakfast was delicious, with three different options. The location is perfect, two-minutes walking distance from the Takayama JR station and close to all main tourist attractions.
The facilities look a bit outdated compared to my first visit a few years ago. Also based on our own experience and compared to other ryokans we stayed during our trip in Japan, the experience is not 100% representative of a traditional ryokan. The communication prior to our arrival could have been more efficient, as it took almost a week to get a reply for our first message, and the additional inquiries were not even answered.

It was quite the experience sleeping in a Japanese style bed on the tatami mats. I'm glad I did it. There were many lovely touches in the room like the Kanazawa snacks and the origami swan that was left after they set up our beds. The location is excellent. Close to many sites and the train station. Lots of good restaurants nearby.
There wasn't a good place to put our luggage. It felt wrong to put it on the tatami mats and the space just inside the door by our shoes was cramped for two small suitcases. We had to take turns opening them to get stuff out and for packing up. But, this is just a minor quibble. Not a deal breaker.

For a Ryokan next to the main Takayama train station and in walking distance of the Hidatakayama Sanmachi historic district, you can't get any better :-) You'll almost miss it when approaching from the street, as from the outside it doesn't stand out. But once you get in it's almost as if you entered a parallel universe -- a Japanese parallel universe. The staff is super helpful, and you're given traditional Japanese clothes to wear during your stay. The experience was very enriching and in Takayama this hotel was part of the experience, not just a place to sleep. We bought time on a private hot bath in the hotel and loved it. You can choose a standard western, or a traditional Japanese breakfast. We opted for the latter, and found it amazing, very rich and tasty.

Everything. We started with a warm welcome. We were given a choice of kimonos and shown to our lovely traditional room. The staff made a reservation for us at a nearby restaurant which was very good. We booked a private onsen for the following night, 40 minute slots, loved it, worth the 2200 yen. Had a wonderful onsen in the public one. I was worried about sleeping on the floor but it was very comfortable. Our room also had a small couch which we appreciated. Breakfast was excellent. 3 choices, fruit, western or Japanese.
Breakfast finished at 8 am, because it was snowing and -1 degrees, a later time would have been good (could have had a sleep in).

They know what hospitality is all about! Little gestures like providing burner n essential oil to make your room smells good and variety of tea at the cosy living area. The onsen is another plus to unwind from the day. The amenities and toiletries provided are above average! Hotel provides yukatas that you can wear in and out of the premises. Do book the room with breakfast as it is a nice and well presented Japanese breakfast. You can also choose a western breakfast menu. Last but not least, hotel is no more than 10 minutes to the train and bus station. The staff in this hotel are polite, service oriented and they speak English.

Enjoyed the Japanese style breakfast. Great selection and included several hot dishes, such as hida beef on sizzling hot plate, a stew, miso soup, tofu, fish (salmon or mackerel), egg, salad, fruits, tea, rice with little ingredients. Unlike English breakfast, it is light and very interesting and the dishes have different flavours, and the mix of flavours blended very well together. Service was excellent, the waiting staff explained everything in detail, and ensured you received that exceptional level of personal attention. Room floor was tatami mats, shoji windows and the dim lights made it very relaxing after a good day's sightseeing. The bed was very comfortable and I always had a good night's sleep. Location was only two to three minutes from the Takayama station, so the Ryokan was at a very convenient location for both town, market and the rail station.
Nothing.

There was an option of Western or Japanese breakfast each morning. I chose the Japanese for the cultural experience, and each service was beautifully and thoughtfully presented. There was plenty of attentive interaction from the staff who engaged readily with excellent English. The onsen on the ground floor was spacious and a wonderful way to wind down after a day of sightseeing. This property truly made us feel we were getting a wonderful slice of Japanese culture, and was located in a great position, not far from the railways station, but also accessible to walking to the sights of Takayama.

This was a lovely hotel and I would stay there again. The staff spoke English which we really appreciated and were really helpful with all our questions. We let the hotel know in advance that we needed a gluten free breakfast and they went to an amazing effort to accommodate this requirement. Both the gluten free breakfast and the normal western breakfast were delicious. The twin bed room was really spacious and comfortable, way more room than we expected. The hotel is in an excellent location and only a couple of blocks from the station and the old town.

Very Japanese and so pretty. The staff were friendly and attentive and helped us choose a kimono to wear during our stay. The hot spring bath was clean and so welcoming and warming after a freezing cold day. The Japanese breakfast was amazing - so glad we chose it over an English or continental.
It’s always quite tough, sleeping on a futon in the floor - it’s always so difficult to get up out of it! But that’s what we asked for, so it’s not really their fault!!
