The room was well appointed and sleeping on futons amazingly comfortable. The staff were friendly, the onsen lovely and the kaiseki meals delicious.

Room was lovely and traditional, though not the most comfortable futon beds we slept on during our Japan trip (ask for a second futon mattress!). Location was great -- easy access to train/bus station as well as old town and morning market. Onsens were traditional - one inside (hot spring) and two small (heated water) tubs outside. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

We did half board with all meals served inside our room. This was not the best kaiseki experience we had, and we found the food to be fine, but not exceptional. There are so many cafes and izakayas nearby that it was a shame we had to eat in the hotel.

All staff are very kind and dedicated, the dinner and breakfast was delicious and we added the sake taste experience to the dinner, which was great! The location is just perfect. The Japanese style tatami rooms reveal to be very comfortable and a great experience.

Unfortunately, during our stay there was a group of guests at the males onsen with kids, not really respecting the space of others. An experience that was supposed to be relaxing, ended up being stressful and unpleasant. Probably we were just unlucky... At the women's onsen, the experience was great.

This was our second stay at Ryokan Tanabe And will not be our last stay with them. Takayama is so lovely and a must visit and a must stay here. Family run business with wonderful warm staff everyone was very kind to us and the meals are delicious. We were lucky to book a new suite but the older rooms which we stayed in last visit are even more traditional they are also just as lovely. I would be happy to try them all. Second time that we stayed here. The staff was extremely friendly ( although some did not speak English at all, contrary to out first visit) . the room was great!

We had booked a room with breakfast. We asked if we could pay extra to still have dinner but that was not possible. A real bummer as we were kind of set on it and we had been given the option of dinner the first time we visited in the exact same situation. WiFi did not work at all no matter how many times I tried and was very spotty on my partner's phone. All in all it was a step down from the first time but I would still recommend this place and enjoyed my time there! I'm being a bit more critical here, mainly because ryokans are more expensive places and I think details matter in such cases...

There are three main reasons we wanted to stay at this ryokan: the on-site onsen, the traditional Japanese meals served in your room (dinner and breakfast), and experience the Japanese traditional room. Please note you will be sleeping on the floor on futons, which found comfortable. We selected Tanabe met these requirements but exceptionally well. We were pampered. We are thankful for there attention to detail and the clean property. The rooms were spacious and quiet! We loved that we were a 5-8min walk from the train station. 1 min walk from the morning market and the old town full of beautiful wood-carved houses/buildings. We only wished we could have stayed more than 1 night, but we had so much to see and do in Japan. You will not regret staying at Tanabe.

The property and staff are lovely. The Kaiseki dinners were excellent and different each night. We stayed 2 nights and dinner was different each night. If we stay here again, we will choose to have just one night of kaiseki dinner at the Ryokan, and eat somewhere else, just to try the other local options at Takayama. There is also parking at the property. We drove and this made it very convenient for us. Will not hesitate to recommend Ryokan Tanabe to friends and family.

Loved Ryokan Tanabe. You feel like family. It is a popular ryokan so we could only stay one night. Really enjoyed the onsen and the facilities, and the room, but what blew me away was the kaiseki, absolutely delicious with great service for both dinner and breakfast. We would stay there again for the kaiseki.

Everything was great! Wish we could stay longer. Something to note is that they roll away beds in the mornings and put them on the tatami mats after dinner, so if you like to nap during the day, that might be bothersome.

The service was excellent! From the front desk staff to the hotel staff (especially the girl who set up our dinner, she had glasses and a ponytail), everyone was so kind and helpful, you could feel all the love they put in the guests service! Also the dinner/breakfast was absolutely delicious! One of the best we had in Japan so far! And the onsen too! So happy we could experience them in the beautiful ryokan! We'll be back for sure! Thank you❤️

very friendly staff, everything worked very well - dinner set up, making up the room for sleeping, etc. the food was excellent, beds were super comfortable, onsen was lovely and quiet - we were alone. great location. would recommend and stay again!

the hotel is bigger than we expected and on the main road - but once you’re in your room you can’t hear anything. the view from the room is the back of another building, so better keep the curtains closed. really nothing to complain about though!
