The friendlyness of the staff and room decoration was top-tier. The onsen was great, very relaxing. When you walk onto the property, there will be a sign with your name on it, we thought that was a very cool detail! There are simple maps of Takayama available in the Lobby, the old man owner showed us some nice place to go to. It was very rainy our first day and we got complimentary umbrellas. We really loved everything about this place. Two small tips for 1st time visitors: 1 make sure you reserve a restaurant in advance! 2 bring a good coat or plenty of layers!!

The mattresses are a little hard but we didnt mind that. The restaurants all needed reservations in advance but that has nothing to do with Yama no Iori.

Hodakaso Yamano Iori is a wonderful Ryokan located in the central of Takayama town. The Ryokan run by a group of elderly and they were all really nice and polite! We loved everything about it. From the old building itself, traditional japanese style interior, our room was spacious, the onsen, the welcome drinks and snack, our name on the shoes storage area and outside the guest board were both really sweet. We stayed a good 6 days in it and wish to stay longer. Highly recommended! One thing to note as they don't provided washing machine and you have to walk 5 minutes away to get your clothes wash but it's really didn't bother us much. We just loved to take any chance to explore this little town Takayama.

Hodakaso Yamanolori is a very nice, warm, friendly, cosy ryokan. The rooms are comfortable and very clean. The staff are very friendly and warm people. It is a very convenient venue as it is very close to the Morning Market, the Old Town and many eateries. Also importantly, it is a 5 minutes walk away from the train and bus station. Request to stay on the ground floor.

There is no lift in the building, the staff was very kind to carry our luggages to the third storey to our room. However, we carried it back down when we checked out. They do not really speak English, had to use Google Translate to communicate.

I chose this hotel because I wanted to go for the traditional style this time, , as that it would open a tiny window and experience, be it fleetingly, of a lifestyle that I have seen in various Japanese movies… I am glad I chose it starting from the warm reception by the staff, though a bit difficult to communicate but kindness and smile don’t need words… I had been assigned a room on the first floor but there is no lift and I felt bad when the lady at the reception grabbed my suitcase and quickly climbed up the stairs. The room was a big one with the sleeping, rest and toilet quarters well defined The place was spotless clean with a lovely ambiance, with low beds, mattress on futons and straw woven fitted carpets everywhere The hotels has two public onsens, one for women one for men. I am glad I used the services with the proper wear that was left for me in the room. The hotel is a stone throwaway from the old part of the town and only 5 minutes walk to the train station. I really had a most relaxing time in this hotel I felt I was in a mini spa centre and for all this great service I paid a very decent some of money. It might need a bit of sprucing up and making more available other lovely places on the premises but for me it was what I was looking for. For the ones on a shoe string budget if they want to stay away from hostels this place is more than adequate.

not bad enough to be mentioned in this slot

Location was good. Easy walking distance to morning market and the old town. We didn't book the breakfast. However, tea and coffee that we can drink freely were very good. Love their coffee :) The staff were helpful.

The room was okay, but we found the underwear someone left beside our bed, not so sure if anyone did really clean our room? Also we didn't know that one of our rooms has no shower. We had to walk downstairs to use shared-bathroom (small onsen) maybe can only fit 3-4 people at a time. The hotel has no lift, only stairs, so it's quite difficult for older generation.

The location was excellent, close to train station, and tourist attractions. We liked that we got 2 bottles of mineral water every day, as well as clean towels. The Onsen was as expected. We had a room with a loo and wash basin, so had to use the Onsen for all bathing needs.

Our room was as depicted in the photos, however it needs some maintenance (the chairs were broken, and some of the screens were stained or damaged). If you are on the 2nd or 3rd floor, note that you will need to carry own luggage to your room.

1. It is easily accessible from train station 2. Short walk to neighbouring attractions 3. Has an onsen 4. Comfy traditional tatami room and is spacious. 5. Lovely hotel ambience 6. Luggage storage 7. Welcome signboard at entrance with name

Hardly any. No breakfast/dinner in the hotel, but not a big deal as food is easily accessible.

The tatami floor rooms are lovely and very confortable. I slept so well! They are also convenient, since everything was very well distributed and we had room for your backpacks. There were toiletries, yukata and onsen to enjoy. The location, close to the station, is very recommendable, specially if you are also going to Shirakawa-go by bus.

If I had to pick something, the onsen was a bit small and could easily get crowded.

The facility has retro charm, lovely detail in the screens and room format. Enjoyed the lack of plastic, soulless modern fittings. Great little spot and staff are eager to please. Beds were fabulous.

Hot water takes ages to arrive at a some hours, but to be fair guests are advised. Plently of hot water when it gets through. Electric jug in the room would be appreciated.

This was the only hotel where we found really comfortable futon. They have very thick mattress and they are extremely comfortable. We took the room without private bathroom but it was absolutely fine since the common bathroom is really nice and pleasant.

The place offer no breakfast but there is a fantastic coffee place just 5 minutes walking, so we really enjoyed our stay.
