We're a travelling couple with a small child and our visit to Takayama was a highlight within Japan for us. The experience was made especially memorable with the exceptional hospitality provided while staying at Iroriyado Hidaya. The ryokan has limited capacity and therefore provides a very homely vibe with communal areas and facilities including a relaxing onsen. The spacious rooms provided plenty of privacy and comfort. Staff were courteous, helpful and respectful and accompanying us with our child. Optional breakfast is highly recommended. There are so many smaller and finer details about the facility and hospitality that made this stay a trip highlight.

Slightly out of town with about a pleasant and easy stroll approximately 20-25min from town. Short taxi ride, ~¥1000. Absolutely worth it for those who aren't dissuaded by this.

The stuff were all amazing, they welcome and shower us with free candy, helped us book dinner in a Great local place and tickets to shirakawa-go, the onsen was great and and the traditional breakfast was different every day and an exeptional experience by itself. The house is really cool and cozy. Its a bit far from the station (20 min by foot), but you do get to see a bit of the local town and you can allways take a bus. If you travel by car its really easy. All in all, amazing stay

Nothing. Go there and give them your money, they worth it.

We were a bit unlucky and couldn't get a taxi, so had to walk for 15-20 minutes. When we arrived all hot and sweaty (and earlier than the check-in time), we were greeted with such care and love. I felt like I was being fussed over by a mum, who knows what you need to be comfortable. We were given cold tea to drink, towels to dry ourselves, and asked to sit in the air-coned room. Sayuri spent time with us going over the map of Takayama, recommending places to explore. Straight away, they whisked away our luggage, copied passports, and called us a taxi to explore the town before the check-in time. Other positives: - clean rooms - futon beds made for you - yukata hire and fitting - choice of incense for free - amazing Japanese breakfast - quiet and peaceful - onsen that wasn't very busy in September (so you could potentially have it all to yourself) - beautiful views Personally, I loved both Takayama and the ryokan, so this place will forever stay in my heart.

READ the FULL review The only downside is the ryokan's distance from the station and the town centre itself, but if you don't mind a little walk, you'll be fine. It was so worth it!

The staff were all very nice and welcoming. Very friendly too and yet very professional and respectful at all times. We were there to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary , and my very first experience staying at ryokan ;and they made our stay very memorable 🥰. Our room is very spacious and nice. The Japanese breakfasts prepared were very fresh and delicious. The fun time we had trying out the kimonos was awesome . They are very helpful in giving recommendations and helping us to book restaurants . Really appreciate that a lot. Wonderful team !👍🏻👏🏻Thank you very much 😘

Wish the room come with bathroom or onsen

My stay at Iroriyado Hidaya was the highlight of my four-week trip through Japan. From the moment you walk in, it feels like you're being welcomed into someone’s home. The staff are incredibly warm, offering tea and biscuits as you settle in. The room was lovely, and it even had an Irori that you can light once a day—a rare treat in modern ryokans. Sitting by the hot coals added a special, nostalgic touch. The room also had incense, while downstairs there was always tea, snacks, and a communal onsen open to all guests. You can reserve the onsen for yourself for 2,000 yen, but since it’s a small hotel, I hardly ever saw anyone else using it. What made the stay truly memorable, though, was the staff. They go out of their way to make your experience special, from helping you put on a yukata with their free rentals to teaching origami and calligraphy. The breakfast was also incredible. It was traditional Japanese with food that is local to the region like Hida Beef. The breakfast also changed daily which helped me try different dishes from Takayama.

It is worth noting that it’s a bit on the expensive side, at around £300 a night, but for such a personalized and unique experience, it felt well worth it. The hotel is a bit out of the way so I’d recommend hiring a car from Takayama station. From Hidaya it’s an easy drive to most attractions including Shirakawago!

Beautiful traditional Ryokan with the best service staff. We had a lovely welcome by the staff who took time to set up the irori hearth and introduce us to Takayama. The room was traditional style and they had set up the futon for us in the evening. It was so comfortable and enjoyable. The public onsen bath was under renovation, so we booked our timeslot for the private bath which was very enjoyable too. The breakfast served was delicious and meticulously prepared. The location is a bit far from the main station and old town by foot, but easily reached by taxi in 5 minutes. We enjoyed our stay so much. Thank you for the memorable stay.

-staff was so kind and welcoming. Spent time with us to explain nearby areas and restaurants, spent time with my daughters to try on kimonos. Everyone was so kind and amazing. -Room was awesome and spacious. We had 2 children (age 11 and 8), 2 adults. We enjoyed the room and space. -Bedding (futon, comforter, pillows) was high end quality. Excellent comfort and clean. -Yukata robes in the room for each person to wear to onsen and in the house -Japanese breakfast was delicious ! We had 2 breakfasts, the menu was different each morning. -Hotel is not in the downtown area but we liked that. We enjoyed being away in a quiet area and the walk was not bad. Taking taxi was also easy and cost about 1,000 yen each way. -Onsen was very nice, and private. Super clean and so enjoyable to relax after a full day out. We stayed for two nights and while it cost more than other hotels, it was well worth it. Everything was superb. The selection of beautiful kimonos were amazing; I ended up buying 2 (one for my daughter, one for me). We can’t wait to go back and visit the staff, and experience the quietness of Takayama.

We liked everything.

Extremely friendly and welcoming staff. This is a very authentic Japanese Ryokan experience. Rooms are furnished in old style with furniture on the floor and bedding rolled out on the floor at night time. Only stay here if you are expecting to adjust to the Ryokan experience.

It can be difficult for a westerner to be comfortable getting up and down from the floor and sleeping on thin floor mats. You have to adjust your comfort expectations. This inn is NOT close to old town Takayama. It is not in a scenic, historic or charming part of town. Fast food restaurants and gas stations are more the norm.

If you’re visiting Takayama, you MUST stay here. We had the most wonderful stay with the most wonderful hosts. I travel for work often, domestic and international, and typically stay at 4 and 5 star hotels. This is definitely among my favorite stays in my travels! We arrived shortly before check-in time and were greeted with tea, a snack, and warm blankets. The host sat down and showed us a map of all the best attractions in Takayama while we drank our tea. Our room and the entire ryokan were immaculately clean (very important to me) and super cozy. I actually looked forward to going back to the room each night to spend time near the coals or under the heated blanket table (the room has great AC and heat by the way). They also provided plenty of Japanese snacks, coffee, tea, incense, and even origami. The real reason you should stay here is because of the hospitality of the hosts and uniqueness of the experience. They were so happy to see us each time we arrived back at the property and were willing to answer any questions we had along the way. It was a treat to see them each day! Breakfast was included each day and you can choose a traditional Japanese style breakfast or a western style breakfast. I highly recommend trying the Japanese breakfast at least one day! It was intimidating for a westerner but is quite delicious and the staff will guide you through the whole experience. The onsen was perfect, so relaxing, and very clean. We went at the end of each day around 9 PM and there was no one in the onsen so it was basically private! The property is intimate and you don't need to worry about a lot of folks using the onsen at once. One note, the property is about a 20 minute walk from the main Takayama area but that wasn’t an issue for us. In fact it was perfect. It was so nice to wander through the side roads getting into and out of town. In fact, we came across more than one restaurant or sake brewery by just wandering around.
