An amazing onsen-hotel in central Takayama with a rooftop onsen that has an astonishing view of the town and surrounding area (in addition of being a pretty decent onsen in its own right, both indoor and outdoor, plus private alternatives to the main public facility). The view from the upper floor rooms is also exceptional, and as mentioned at the start, location almost cannot get any better. The room itself it pretty decent (with a minor caveat, see below), and with a bed that feels like a modern take on the traditional futon. Can also recommend the breakfast option. While I would not say there is no room for improvement, in this price category, and in this location, it deserves a 10/10!
Last time I went to Takayama Ouan, I was astonished how big and well-thought out the room was. The room I got this time (should have been same category, same price) was still pretty decent, but not quite the same level, so do be aware that there is a variety in the room designs, sizes and layouts. Otherwise, sure, you might be able to get a better experience if you would pay a few hundred more GBP or USD, but in this price category, and in Takayama (or at a similar location), you cannot expect to get any better.

The Mountain View from the hotel room is remarkable. The amenities such as onsen hot spring, restaurant, etc are excellent. Just a friendly suggestion for the instructions of the onsen room: 1. View the plan of the 3 onsen rooms on the wall. 2. Decide one of the 3 onsen rooms that you would like to use. 3. Then, look for the line/area with the name of your desired onsen room. There are 3 sitting areas with the name of each onsen room. 4. Queue by sitting on the stool (tree trunk) placed in each line/area of your desired onsen room.

An absolutely amazing onsen-hotel in central Takayama that way exceeded my expectations. The staff were friendly, the public areas of the hotel were very nice and with plenty of facilities, and the rooftop onsen (both indoors and outdoors, and both public and private alternatives) was exceptional! You could also see pretty much all of beautiful Takayama from the onsen (as well as from the upper floor rooms), which is a major plus, and as I mentioned at the start, location cannot get any better. The room itself is really good (and very well thought-out), especially when considering the price, and the bed was a significant improvement over the usual futon (yet kept the traditional look). I dare say that in this price category, and in this location, you cannot get any better!
Nothing really; sure, you might be able to get a better experience if you would pay a few hundred more GBP or USD, but in this price category, and in Takayama (or at a similar location), it cannot get any better.

Location was great, close to bus station, a short walk to cafes and konbini, not far from centre. The private onsen is amazing, great views. I really liked the room, super comfy and spacious enough. The ramen in the evening was a nice addition.
The staff wasn’t the best. It started with them shouting at us at entering for the first time to take off the shoes, continued with rushing us through checkin, making me feel like i’m bothering them with my questions about the facilities. They didn’t give us the house rules at all, which resulted in them shouting at us again the next day when I wore the slippers they provided in the common areas. Then when we asked about restaurants (as on wednesdays as we discovered, lots of places are closed in the city!), they were barely polite.

This is a beautiful and warm hotel. With super cool atraction, the baths. Is a really nice experience when you are not from Japan (im not, because of that im write this). But in the same time, is super cool to meet another japoneses people, because is not a super full of ocidental turists. I think this is super nice when you are in a country and u can find people from there. The socks to walk in the hotel, the free sakê, the amenities, the breakfast, all this are a great experience to visit a hotel in a small town in Japan. I loved.
The room is ok, is big comparing with another places in Japan. But the room dont have anything especial like the rest of the hotel.

Nice to have a mix of open air and indoor baths. They serve both dinner and breakfast. Front desk stayed open past last available check in time. Bed was very comfortable. Location is right by the train station, but far enough so there’s no noise from the trains.
There was a furniture stain in my room, and it wasn’t clear how long I could store luggage. note that the view from the open air bath is just ok as it’s mainly parking lots and other more bland buildings.

We stayed at the hotel for 4 nights, booked a double room with queen bed which was on the 12th floor. The hotel is cosy and well decorated. The bed was super comfortable, and I really enjoyed the no shoes policy. Breakfast was delicious, with eggs being made regularly and a good variety in general. Private onsens are great, and it can be a good first experience for those who are not so used (especially good if you gave tattoos). The waiting time can be longer after 19:30, there was no wait when we visited at 18:30. If you don't have tattoos, do visit the 'public' one. It's bigger and nicer than the private ones, and the outside onsen is beautiful. I had a great time enjoying the hot water while looking at the starry sky! Overall we had a good stay and we would recommend this hotel.
Laundry service needs improvement. There are two washing machines and two dryers, one being out of service (broken). You put 100 yen, and the dryer runs for 20 minutes. Depending on how many clothes you are washing, you definitely need at least a 40-minute cycle. So you can imagine the backlog and long waiting times if only one is available for several rooms.

We enjoyed everything, the room was great, the private Onsen was lovely on a cold sunny day. Being naked outside on the top floor hotel in a bath was quite the experience. There are 3 private Onsen of various sizes, separated, women and men and 1 public Onsen. All are excellent. Breakfast was excellent, lots of choice from Japanese and Western. Staff always helpful and friendly.

Maybe a little bit outdated but the onsen are amazing. I was afraid it would be crowded because the hotel seemed crowded but I was able to enjoy the public onsen alone or with only a couple of other ladies. I even got a private onsen. I was there on a weekend so. Pretty good! Room very big for japan. Mattress on the floor I don’t mind it was nice. Good cleaning.
There is a free ramen service. But the dining room is like a big cafeteria. And for the ramen they give you a buzzer. So once you are there all you hear is buzzers non stop. This and the breakfast are not friendly experiences at all. It’s loud and kind of weird with people wearing the hotel pyjamas but not talking. Buzzers buzzers buzzers…

The hotel is very nice - homey and welcoming. The room was big and nice had plenty of amenities. There is a public bath and private baths for families and people with tattoos. There are plenty of cool free give aways like popsicles outside the baths and there is free ramen every night. I bought a breakfast ticket one of the mornings and the breakfast was great! plenty of local options and western options too. The food was really good! Would stay there again.
The hotel is at the end of the main road but not a hard or too long of a walk. FYI - no shoes in the hotel. not bad - just something to know.
