Greywalls Hotel & Chez Roux

Breakfast was very good, but a little slow in getting our tea, the gardens and surroundings were fabulous, it's clear that the gardeners take pride in what they do. Wish the bar area was a little bigger, it would seem there is plenty of space. Staff very helpful but felt that we could have been asked on being shown to our room if we wished a kettle and tea, I think these should be in the room without having to ask.

The room was very good but decoration was a little tired. Beautiful curtains but let down by 2 very cheap looking ceiling lights.

The main building and surroundings are lovely, with gardens you can visit and enjoy at your leisure. In our cottage, the bed was big and comfortable, and it was a good size. The location was very convenient, and the wi-fi signal on our cottage was excellent. The breakfast was also delicious and well-presented when served. The staff was friendly and accommodating to our requests while we stayed there.

The room seemed cold even though the weather was hot outside. I imagine this was because the cottage is ground-level, where sunlight doesn't shine directly on the property. There were also some signs of deterioration within the property that you wouldn't expect in a 5-star hotel.

What a beautiful place! The gardens are stunning. The food was excellent. The location for golf is awesome. All the staff are lovely.

It's not quite value for money. The attitude to cleaning could be a little more detailed, there were a lot of cobwebs. The coffee machine is an enigma! Most importantly, the water pressure is dreadful; utterly impossible to shave with hot water, and the shower was sometimes ok but never great

Service and staff were excellent. Love the location. Beautiful garden.

Although it is pet friendly (paying £20 per day), dog is allowed only in room. We could not have breakfast or dinner at the restaurant, so had to other room service (different menu from their restaurant). It would be nice to have an area in the dining/drinking/library area for guests with dogs.

Beautiful small hotel - an architectural gem designed by Lutyens with Gertrude Jekyll gardens. Wonderful location in the dunes of the East Lothian coast. Discreet and competent service. Quiet and comfortable single room. Very good food.

Non-golfers should note that the other guests were golfers. Some maintenance was needed on the window catches in my room.

Greywalls is a fabulous reminder of days gone by. The house is full of family mementos and portraits, which make it feel homely and welcoming. Library and other public rooms with a nightcap, the fire going and the live piano was a perfect way to end the evening. Breakfast was excellent. Lovely views over Muirfield and the sea. Our Cottage room (aka the Kings Toilet - seriously, was originally a courtyard where Edward 7 would sit on the ‘throne’ as he liked open-air evacuations!) was fabulous. Spacious and very private with lovely views of the walled garden. Staff were attentive and charming.

It was clean but after all those years coujd probably go with a deep clean and possibly some re-upholstering.

Whats not to like? Amazingly beautiful Lutyens property with great setting next to Muirfield golf course. I was able to book a room at 10pm on a Friday night after another hotel booking had been cancelled by mistake,elsewhere.

Minor things The bed was unfortunately too soft for my body I did not have a key

This hotel is just beautiful. The public areas are so peaceful with no TVs or background music. This is our ‘go to’ place when we need total relaxation. This trip we had the opportunity to dine with food prepared by Chef Michel Roux jnr and accompanied by the most perfect wines. I mean what is there not to like.

There is absolutely nothing you can’t like here.

Staff were brilliant, in that they were attentive, visible, helpful and pleasant. Evening meals were also very good albeit difficult to get the times we wanted as we were late bookers and the 8.00 slots were all taken by the time we got there. Location was spot on which allowed us to travel around the area with ease - the hotel garden were fantastic, all the flowers were out and it looked at its best.

As with the evening meal we had to book a time slot which wasn't particularly convenient also the full Scottish was a little disappointing as the only difference to a full English was the addition of a little haggis - would have expected potato scones and Lorne sausage. The breakfast service was also a little slow. I only mention these points for hotel feedback as this in no way spoilt our break.

Beautiful architecture. Comfortable old world charm. Lovely restaurant - dinner and breakfast were delicious. Staff friendly and helpful. Beautiful setting overlooking the golf course
