Bacon Arms, Newbury

great location with free parking in the centre of a beautiful market town. we were greeted warmly and felt welcome the minute we arrived. the room was spotless, comfy bed and all the facilities you could hope for. staff were very hospitable and we wish them every success in their new venture.

I have seen some comments that I feel are a bit harsh. The new owners have only been in a week so there’s bound to be teething problems. following the pandemic and the cost of living crisis, I think people should be more supportive of family businesses and would encourage people to visit and see for themselves what a great spot this is.

The bedroom window needed to be double glazed. Too much noise from outside ..drunks yelling at night

Loved the Greek restaurant and music. Room was spacious and comfortable. Staff were lovely and very helpful. Location was perfect for where we wanted to go etc. Also, free parking was great!

The only thing was that the top room (number 7) where we stayed really smelt of cigarettes. Not sure if someone had been smoking in there before us or whether smoke was entering the room another way. Our clothes really smelt of smoke when we left and we had to leave the window open most of the time. This kind of thing doesn’t usually bother me but it was quite bad!

Probably having slept in this hotel in a relatively quiet time has helped. (end of november's weekday) The room was fairly clean, the sheets on the bed clean, the heating working ok. Not the grand hotel, but for the money is not that bad.

Don't expect soundproofing, quite the opposite. Again, it was a quiet weekday, and I can only imagine the noise during weekends... But again is normal is structures like these. you know what you gonna get. For what is offered, probably £10 less would be more appropriate in their tariffs. I reckon the right price for these room shouldn't be more than £45 per night for a double. The bathroom was fairly clean although the actual toilet wasn't unfortunately.

Great location, ease of parking, cleanliness, very friendly staff. Our first night was in a spacious twin room with comfortable beds. Moving rooms was made easy for us by making the second room available early in the day which we appreciated

Our second night was in a double room. I could feel every spring of the mattress and my husband slept badly, too. The shower head needs to have limescale removed, it‘s a very thin flow of water. The liquid soap holder was broken.

Friendly staff, accommodating as I arrived late in th evening really close to the closure of the kitchen but they accommodated me. Bed was comfy and exactly what I needed for a bed for the night due to a work conference.

I would say the property needs upgrading but in current climate this is difficult for businesses. Based on what I paid I was thankfully surprised at the great night sleep I got which I sometimes struggle in hotels I paid more for.

Friendly staff that went above and beyond to help. Wished we could have tried the restaurant but didn't have time so will be back. Did have the skinny fries though and they were the best thing I've eaten.

Could definitely do with updating the room decor and interior but it wasn't a massive issue. It's an old building, so you expect some lumps and bumps. , For me, the main problem was the curtains, I'm a light sleeper, and light wakes me up, so blackout curtains would be good.

The new managers were doing their best to put right the many problems left by the previous manager around ten days earlier. Breakfast was available very close to the hotel because their own kitchen was still not in an acceptable state. Good traditional ales available at the bar. I would encourage other travellers to ignore all reviews prior to May 2023 because they will not reflect the current state of affairs.

Nothing worth recording.

The owners where amazing very friendly and amazing hosts made to feel very welcome from moment arrived till time we left next day but not before sharing a cheeky night cap with them when we returned from our function thanks for that ended the day brilliantly

Not a thing only shame was no breakfast the chef had an emergency so understand things happen but nice cafe across the road worth a try

When we stayed there did not seem to be a breakfast option. The room is a reasonable size especially for a short break. The location is excellent. Very near the middle of town and a lovely park. Although on a fairly busy road at night there is not much traffic about. Also there is a car park on site. The food on offer was well cooked.

A quite big step from the bathroom to the bedroom but that's all.
