Ideal location right in the centre of Newbury within easy walking distance of shops, bars, restaurants. Excellent parking facilities. Easy and straightforward check-in process. Room size was excellent, plenty of space and storage with room being quiet at night. "Secret" garden was lovely - you wouldn't think you were in the centre of town. Set out with lots of tables/chairs and covered areas with heating and lights. Buffet breakfast was ideal - help yourself to cereal, fruit juice, hot selection (bacon, sausage, eggs, mushroom, beans etc) with lots of bread/toast/jam/marmalade available. Seperate area offering tea/coffee. We ate here couple of times in the evening with the food being delicious. All staff were superb - very helpful, polite and courteous.

Unfortunately couple of niggles that prevent giving a higher rating. On arrival found underpants/socks left behind from the previous occupant in one of the cupboard drawers - not nice. Biggest concern was the shower - we could not regulate the temperature of the water, it was either scalding hot or ice cold and was very difficult to obtain anything in-between (didn't raise this as an issue as only staying three nights so we just "made do"). Just an observation but the building is starting to look tired in places but nothing a lick of paint wouldn't sort out.

Warm welcome, staff went above and beyond, adding to the charm of this wonderful hotel. The manager introduced himself which was a lovely personal touch. When I needed to alter the booking to accommodate an extra person, it was done very efficiently. The garden is a hidden oasis, by far the best outside space in a hotel I’ve seen. Spacious and charming, this lovely hotel has kept its traditional feel with a few modern touches. Excellent location for exploring Newbury, Highclere and the surrounding area. Every member of staff we met during our stay made us feel so welcome and couldn’t do enough to help. Excellent electric car charging facilities that are simple to use.

Nothing!

The hotel was very centrally located and was architecturally very beautiful. There was plenty of parking and the outside terrace was well landscaped and tended. The small double bedroom we had was perfectly acceptable for the one night we spent here. We were a little late down for breakfast so perhaps the choice of pastries such as croissant was a little depleted and we had to wait for the hot items to be re-stocked but on the whole it was fine

Very little we disliked it was a perfect location for us and ideal for the pit stop we needed on our way down to Cornwall. If we were staying longer I think I would have splashed out on a bigger room but apart from that it was perfect for us

The Chequers was great! The Executive suite was very large and comfortable for us and our 11yr old. We had plenty of room and storage. The room was spotless and had everything we needed except bedside sockets for charging phones and (it's a tiny point) only 2 cups even though we were 3 - and no teaspoons. It was quite warm and we were provided with a fan but could have done with another to have near the other bed but there were no more available. Other than that the room was super comfy. The location is perfect to explore Newbury town/museum/canal etc. Walkable for these attractions and there are many, many places to eat and drink. We ate at the hotel the first night and the food was great. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was lovely too. We chose this hotel for it's location mainly, as we were visiting Highclere Castle and it was perfect for that - just 15 mins by car. Free parking is at the rear of the hotel, staff reminded us to register our vehicles when we checked in which was very easy.

Only negative was the lack of bedside sockets for charging phone/smartwatch etc

This was our third stay at the Chequers hotel and as before we couldn’t fault it.The room was a small double but had plenty of space and the bathroom was a fair size. The room was very clean and comfortable.A fan is provided which came to good use on a sticky muggy night. The buffet breakfast was very tasty with a variety of choices. There is plenty of parking at the hotel and the location is ideal being at the top of the vibrant high st and just a few minutes walk from the canal. The staff are very friendly and helpful.I would definitely recommend to anybody visiting Newbury to stay here

Nothing to dislike

Room was very comfortable and well equipped. Good sized bathroom/shower with nice toiletries. Tea and Coffee making facilities were readily available and kept stocked throughout our stay. Breakfast was very good, and generally an excellent choice of both hot an, shops etc. All staff were exceptionally friendly, professional and helpful and really made our brief stay most enjoyable. It was particularly nice to have a choice of areas in which to relax (Bar, Garden and several lounges). We were pleased to find the hotel had a good sized car park easily accessed from the main road. Restaurant food was very good and service was superb.

Being on the 2nd floor with no lift, and room itself was a fair walk from main areas. It was very hot weather during our stay, and the room would have benefitted from air conditioning - although an air cooler/fan was provided, it only helped a little. Fresh fruit selection at breakfast, disappeared after our first day which was a little disappointing. Although very good, we found the food and drink prices o be a little on the high side. It was occasionally difficult to find a quiet area to relax (without piped music, and on one occasion with one group hosting their own Film night on a laptop within the main lounge)

Lovely hotel downstairs, plenty of different areas to sit and a good bar. Nicely decorated restaurant and lovely food. Sat in the beer garden for a while before our meal. The room had an ironing board, iron, hairdryer, extra heater, a fan, tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water. Nice sized room. Good location and private car park. Staff were great. We would stay again.

Our room needed a bit of TLC. Skirting boards had flaked paint, dust on the wall next to the bed and the floor next to the sink in the bathroom. Lampshades over the bedside shelves were past their best. It was quite warm in the room and we didn't want to leave the window open as there was a fire escape ladder right outside, but saying that, I did feel reassured that it was there. The windows up the stairs could do with dusting/cleaning. Just small things but could make a huge difference overall.

A real gem of a hotel, surpassed my expectations for the price we paid. Friendly staff, lovely room, prime location, free parking and a tasty breakfast too. A bottle of water and biscuits each was a nice touch. The towels were a good size and fluffy. The hotel is an old building, I think a coaching inn plus a couple of houses knocked through so it’s quirky, a perfect blend of modern and old, tastefully decorated. We had dinner at the hotel and the food and service was excellent.

I found the bath really high to step in to, would have liked a grab handle and I’m not that old and really quite stable normally! The room was very warm, there was a fan but it didn’t work very well and needed a good clean on the blades. The window did open a few inches but that made it noisy as it faced the main road, although the hotel can’t do much about that.

Room size , value for money as stated 2 nights with bed and breakfast at such a brilliant price. Room had sofa, tub chair and ample space, biggest I've stayed in so far. Location to town brilliant but also 15 mins away drive from High Clere Castle. Bar and restaurant great service and couldn't fault the hospitality from the staff, including the house keeping staff. If we asked for extra milk, tea etc, it was given without asking why and even ice for room when needed it to cool wine down. Very clear rooms and would thoroughly recommend it again as it was a gem of a find. Garden lovely to sit in while listening to the water falls. Thank you so much as a perfect week end.

Old windows but what do you expect from such an old building. No air conditioning but the staff but mobile ones in, so can't fault them on it. Really can't complain about anything.

The room was lovely and spacious. The location was great. Just what we needed. Breakfast was laid out for self-service and was great. Lots of choice, whether you wanted a full English or just a bowl.of cereal.

Someone had been smoking out of the window, and there were cigarette butt's on the flat roof. If you had the window open, you could smell them. Reception did sort it. The kitchen extractor fan was on till late at night and made such a noise. The outside light was on all night. I'm sure that this could have been on a movement sensor rather than just permanently on. The menu was very restricted. Not much choice.
