Charming old pub in good location for Newbury Showground

Essentially nothing really wrong it just wasn’t pristine. The room was good enough with large comfy bed nice bed linen and soft clean towels. Reasonably well equipped. However the carpets were trashed and needed replacing and it all needed a really good deep clean and polish up in all the nooks and crannies! We had room 5 with a tiny bathroom which smelt a bit damp when we arrived but was alright once we’d run the taps a bit. Also it’s obviously very dog friendly and the whole place smelt of dogs masked with very strong air freshener. May I add though that this is all meant as constructive criticism as for a one night stay it was adequate and staff were very welcoming. Breakfast was ok not the best but suffice.

This was another return visit ( to visit family nearby); the beds are extremely clean and comfortable, and nice towels and toiletries; the breakfast is very good, this time we saw new staff who were very helpful. Overall it’s very comfortable and quiet with good food, and welcoming. it’s a nice fairly rural, setting.

Unfortunately the weather had been very hot and the room remained stifling hot even when it got cooler outside. There was an air conditioner but it wasn’t much help. We could only open the bedroom window a bit and the bathroom one not at all. Whenever we stay there are some bits that need dusting.

The Inn is located at the bottom of a dead end road so nice and quiet. The greeting was warm and friendly even though we arrived late in the evening. Unfortunately we missed dinner but looking at the menu that was a big mistake but was made up by an exceptional breakfast. The rooms are well equipped and appointed with very comfortable beds, all the amenities you would expect in a high end hotel and a bathroom that had a shower that had pressure galore. The pub itself was welcoming and had all the bells and whistles of an English public house with great real ales.

Lovely pub and rooms and so comfortable - especially the bed and pillows - felt like i was floating in a cloud!! Great views onto field with horses. Plenty of parking. Rooms are dog friendly and would be easy access to pub garden. Breakfast: plenty of choice and excellent. Staff very friendly and attentive.

Nothing really!! Shower head was a little low but couldnt have been any higher. Would have liked some muesli/granola type of ceral and possibly some plain yoghurt but i didn't ask for it.

We had room number 8. Absolutely lovely room, around the back of the pub, private access with parking right outside, includes a sofa in the room. Staff are friendly and it was lovely to sit in the bar for a few drinks in the evening and not have far to walk

On the 2nd night we booked to include breakfast via booking.com and were charged £30, however direct at the property the breakfast menu has all options for less than £15, so for example if both people had the omelette as a couple you would unnecessarily pay £15 over the actual cost. We both opted for the full english and unfortunately breakfast wasn't great, I felt it was a little undercooked and temperature was a little cool, also the complimentary tray could have had a bit more in there as I had to ask for a top up due to staying 2 nights, but that was no trouble when I asked the staff

Our room had plenty of character, which we love, spacious, drinks and teas on offer in the room first class, lovely big tv, and the dyson fan a godsend in the hot weather. Loved the shower, probably the best we've ever experienced away from home. Friendly, accommodating staff. Terraced seating out front and a lovely big beer garden out the back where you can watch the horses in the adjoining field. A beautiful part of the country to visit.

It's not that we didn't like them, but the meals weren't necessarily to our taste. But that didn't matter as there are plenty of places to eat out in the surrounding villages and in the main town of Wallingford, which we absolutely loved.

The staff were lovely but particularly the lady ( think her name is Marie ) who welcomed me and my pet when I arrived . She was lovely . Easy check in and room available early with no fuss . Lovely touches were the smart fan in the room , dog bed and bowl . Nothing was too much trouble . Well done to all the staff . Lovely dog walks nearby .

Not a major gripe but pillows could’ve been better quality . Didn’t spoil my stay .

We only ate breakfast at the Inn but it was lovely. The veggie breakfast was superb, the spinach, the avocado and haloumi gave the meal a real boost. The meat-eaters in the family enjoyed their full English; it had everything. The staff were very friendly and chatted despite having a special event planned for the day or our departure. We didn't take our dogs but there were some good dog walks right from the doorstep.

The accomodation looked tired in places and could do with a bit of a spruce up. The bathroom areas needed old splash marks wiping away and the shower area had the black mould marks around the edges. The carpets were a little dusty/smelly. Nothing that would put me off staying again though.

The room was comfortable and had outside access to it and to the dining room which was important to us avoiding covid contact. Also a small outside table and chairs with patio doors, so nicely designed but a plant would have helped! It was quiet because it was midweek and few people around. The bed was big and comfy and the bathroom also big and good. The breakfast was good. Service one day was excellent- the next day a little more of a struggle. Nice quiet fairly rural setting with a horse field behind. We stayed there to visit family and will definitely do so again.

The curtains were hanging off the rail, we couldn’t open windows securely, it hadn’t been cleaned behind the net curtain for a long time and there were bits of fluff on the floor but bed and bathroom were very clean. I couldn’t reach the shower extractor fan switch above the wardrobe tho my husband could at a stretch!

Room was 'quirky' and bed extremely comfortable and big. Surrounding area lovely and peaceful.

The only drawback is cost of the food/meals - if you are on a budget make sure you check the menu first before booking. As you are stuck in the middle of nowhere -unless you wish to drive again - you have a 2 mile jaunt to Hermitage up the road - £33 for two fish and chips whilst nice is too pricey (despite the posh name it was just fish and chips) and £3.30 for a small bottle of coca cola was a tad over priced for the location. But if you don't want to pay that sort of price check first. Service was OK and staff you cant fault but its more a budget thing as regards to costs.
