It was a nice place with the traditional style of the Japanese culture. The private onsen was good, it was outside of the building tho (in a small can right outside). The staff was super friendly

Nothing really bad but keep in mind that the dinner and breakfast that are included are very traditional as well, mostly sea food, pickled veggies, etc. Also the the bus to get there from Odawara station (1150 yen p.p) takes around 60-70 min (regardless what google says)

The staff were lovely and very patient with my English/Japanese translator. We loved the room (our first time sleeping on the mats). We enjoyed the onsen. Loved that the location was out of town. We rented a car so it was no problem. Loved seeing my name outside the door when we checked in. Food was fantastic. Breakfast was a little much for us at 8:00 but the quality of the food was outstanding.

Facilities are dated as many have mentioned but clean. We realized as we were checking out that our room fridge stopped working so we had to throw out some of our food.

The staff was really kind, and the main onsen and the private one were so nice! The location was super beautiful too!

I wish people with tattoos could use the public onsen.

Staff were all very helpful and friendly. Traditional Japanese clothing is provided for you to wear if you wish. Breakfast and dinner were superb. The building itself is very interesting, and has a gallery with interesting art and artefacts on display. The hot springs were amazing and were the highlight of the trip. Traditional room was very spacious and the futon beds were surprisingly comfortable.

Out of the way location. You will probably want to hire a car to get there and around the local area as there are only limited buses for public transport.

An authentic experience. This is a 300years old onsen. Here you will experience the real onsen but don’t expect luxury. The ryokan is old but very clean and spacious. The dinner was excellent and the breakfast was good. Be prepared for a different breakfast than the common. Forget croissants with butter and marmalades!! It’s fish!!! The bus stop of the Hakone pass bus is 3 mins from the ryokan. And the Ashi lake 10mins with the bus. Next to the onsen there is a museum that is worth a visit.

Great place, two different waters in onsen makes it not only for relaxing but also healthy stay. All the procedures are typical for Ryokan, so it was a great (but not always known) experience for european person - rooms, shoes, tatami mats, yukatas - you have it all. But the highlight is food, awesome kaiseki style dinner and breakfast makes for a complete experience of traditional japan.

it is not something I disliked but I guess people should be aware that this place is a little bit older and in the middle of nowhere, so if you are looking for a luxury hotel next to restaurants and in the center - this is not a place for you. But if you (like me) want to slow down and experience japan tradition - perfect address.

Traditional ryokan experience. We tried out the private onsen. We are a family of two adults and three children and first they were saying there is a four person limit. However, in the end we were able to try it out with the whole family. The public onsen was open all the time and there were very few other guests at the time of our visit so it was almost private anyway. Separate for men and women of course so not for the whole family.

The dinner and breakfast were very fine traditional ryokan meals. For (western) children (and adults) who are not that comfortable with exotic dishes, there was not that much for their liking.

The ryokan stood out with friendly and attentive staff, delicious breakfast and dinner, coziness, amazing history, and lovely open-air private reserved onsen. In addition, there is a fun but small "museum" with some history of the Ryokan, a few artifacts, and a small collection of traditional art. This gave a lot to wander through between onsen visits. There is not too much around in Ashinoyu, but this gave the area and ryokan a very rural, relaxed feel, which was exactly what we wanted after a week of intense sightseeing. We visited during an off-season weeknight, so there were only 2 other groups we saw staying at the ryokan, so we could have been alone in the public onsen. That said, we just used the private onsen you could reserve for 30-minute periods for 2000 yen. It was in a small separated structure and had two hot-tub sized baths, one with clear water and one with the famous milky white water. We requested vegetarian food through the website, but the ryokan didn't get the message, and we arrived too late for them to change the meal in time. They apologized with a free onsen reservation and provided a delicious vegetarian breakfast. We only know a few Japanese words and they only knew a few English words, but this (plus translation app) was enough to communicate through this issue. We loved our stay here.

It's hard to come up with something we truly didn't like, but the facilities could have had clearer wayfinding and instructions on how to use the ryokan/onsen. If you're unfamiliar with how these work, make sure to read up beforehand. The room seemed a bit worn, but we found it charming and comfortable. It was very clean and all the amenities worked, so the wear was not a problem.

It's the second time I stayed in Ryokan in Japan and Kinokuniya Ryokan gave the ambience and experience that make me want to go back to Japan again! Kaiseki dinner & breakfast served is very delicious. The staffs is very helpful and kind to me & every guest. My family enjoyed the private Onsen bath service with additional charge. Everything is perfect. The location is not in busy or main area in Hakone, the closest convenient store is 5 minutes by bus. But reservation really informative and will give you this information before your arrival.

nope, I like everything

The food was delicious and of high quality and nutritious. The staffs were very polite and serve us well. The onsen was great too. Spacious and well equipped with toiletries. Yukata provided and each room has own toilet attached. Spacious and clean, though the furniture is a bit old. Perhaps, this is antique. Our rooms are downstairs, so no need to drag our luggage upstairs... anyway, they have lift. Overall, a very comfortable stay for all of us.

Nothing so far.
