Before coming, I saw that on this website this hostel had an incredible score of 9.2/10 for 308 customer reviews. So I trusted them, I booked it! Finally, it was a VERY GOOD DECISION. As soon as we arrived, we were amazed by the decor, it's out of the soulless hotels. Here there is a soul. And this atypical decoration comes from the fact that before this place was... a post office! Nice entrance hall, we have Mikado, free accessories, a free coffee and tea distributor, several tables to sit, talk or work. Ideal space for coworking for example. I took the biggest room. Everything was clean and they even thought of USB plugs to charge phones or other. Futons ultra clean. Mrs Kana is very welcoming, we love her. She had the time to drive us to visit some ABSOLUTELY unusual places and it was not planned ! The dormitories and rooms are at totally reasonable prices I think. 2 Konbini are next door ! Family Mart or 7Eleven. There is a bakery or tea house in front of but we did not have time to test. In short, everything was so good that we decided to extend our stay by one night. I join all the previous glowing comments with my 10/10.
Aucune critique négative : c’était PARFAIT !!

There are no words to express our gratitude for everything Kana did for us. The building itself is a piece of history, and the owner has made the place feel like a home with its own story. We stayed in the private room, and everything was perfect. There aren't many guests, so we had no issues when we wanted to use the bathroom or shower. You can cook or shop at the nearby stores. Additionally, there is plenty of information about everything in the area, and Kana's recommendations and guidance were invaluable. Kana, thank you for showing us the most beautiful side of Japanese culture!
Be careful because most places close rather early, but this is not a negative point itself. Just something you should keep it in mind!

My stay here was excellent. The facilities themselves are good. I had a private room which met my expectations. The bed was extremely comfortable, and despite the information about road noise, it was quiet enough that I slept well. The kitchen had everything I needed, The location around Miyanoshita was great, with a lot of nearby attractions, convenience stores, and good access to transport. Last, but not least: The dorm manager, Kana, is amazing. She was exceptionally helpful and accommodating. 700 reviews and almost every one mentions how lovely she is. Its no exaggeration. The weather for my trip was poor, and my planning for Hakone was worse. Despite that, Kana helped me to salvage my Hakone trip into something truly memorable. She went far out of her way multiple times to make my Hakone stay more enjoyable. Kana is an amazing hostess, a blast to chat with, and a major highlight of my trip to Hakone. If I ever return to Hakone, I'll definitely book here again.

The location is right in the centre of Miyanoshita… only 5 minutes away from the train station.. and 2 minutes away from both bus stop… to Odawara and/or Hakone lake. Even though I have only spent a day/night I had a wonderful time over there. The location is great and cosy, and the hostel itself is clean, cosy and I could get a nice sleep. The owner, Kana, is such a lovely person who can help you out with any activity you would like to do there and she will give nice tips around the area. It was super nice to have a chat with her. I will definitely be back there for at least a couple of days.

Kana, the host is an amazing person who looks after all her guests and went far beyond the call of duty to support me through a couple of small crises with nothing but good humour and persistence. The place is old stye Japanese accommodation but warm and inviting and very comfortable. It was spotlessly clean and the kitchen had everything you could possibly need. The beds, while futon , was very comfortable! The wifi works well and there was always plenty of hot water :) I would stay here again in heartbeat. The location was great and provides easy access to short hikes in beautiful surroundings - but also all the tourist attractions. Hakone is a really gorgeous area.

Kana is the most amazing and dedicated host I have ever met - and I have travelled a LOT. She goes far beyond the call of duty to help travellers solve the myriad of problems that pop up on the road. I would have been lost without her coming to my rescue!! The hostel is an old building but it is warm and welcoming and the kitchen is amazing, with hot water, tea and coffee always on hand. My room was warm and cosy and the place was SPOTLESS!! Wifi was fast. And Hakone is very expensive in terms of accommodation so this make Hakone Hostel 1914 even more of a find :) It is actually really well situated for engaging in all the amazing activities that the area offers.

Peaceful. Clean. Confortable. Good service. Large luminous room. The receptionist (Kana-san) is very nice and helpful. It was very fun and pleasant. (I liked eating in the common place to chat with the Kana-san or the guests). Well placed : nearby bus and train stations, calm place.
Curtains not thick enough to fully block the light -> but it seems to be always like that in Japan (and I am not used to it) Sound isolation is not the best (weaker than in Europe) -> but it seems to be always like that in Japan (and I am not used to it)

I had a great time in Hakone and it was mostly because of the kind assistance of the hotel owner. She took her time to give me advice and really made sure to match my preferences. I brought a bicycle with me (on the train) and went back to Yokohama with it. I could let my bicycle inside the hostel, protected. The rooms are cozy and simple. There are many Onsens around. Depending on your travel ideas, you might not really need an onsen inside the accomodation. I had fun exploring onsens nearby. The host booked them for me, she also booked tables at restaurants. Also, the hostel as a spacious entrance area with kitchen, tables, sofas. It's easy to get in touch with other travellers. I, for instance, found someone to go hiking with. I can only recommend this place! Look no further. Thank you again for this outstandingly kind and warm welcome!
Nothing.

What I liked about the property was how nice, helpful, and warm the innkeeper Kana was. What a lovely lady, I don’t think I’ve ever had a more positive experience throughout the 13 countries and countless hostels I’ve been to. From reserving hot springs, showing me activities, different bus stations, to helping me learn Japanese she was so helpful and nice I can’t give her enough thanks. The hostel itself was great too had a nice cozy feel to it, gas heaters in every room during winter to help keep me warm. Bathrooms were extremely nice and there were tissues readily available everywhere. Overall a fantastic experience.
As far as a solo backpacker there was nothing that I disliked about this property.
