The Poplars Rooms & Cottages

Just as advertised, cosy little 2 bedroom lodge, with a seperate kitchen and sitting area, perfect for younger kids who sleep earlier. The kitchen is well kitted out with all the essentials including a dishwasher and washing machine. There is a lovely field with a playground next to the lodge which the kids enjoyed exploring and it got them out the way while we got ready for the day. If you plan to spend material amounts of time indoors this is probably not the place for you, but if you want to use as a base for exploring the area and need somewhere to make breakfast and sandwiches to take... spend the occasional wet afternoon this is perfect. The hosts were very welcoming and shared great local knowledge of the area.

What an absolute gem of a place! The room was beautifully presented and super clean. There were plenty of provisions for hot drinks etc. too. We needed a later check-in and the staff were very accommodating. And then the breakfast... the breakfast was absolutely delicious and just what we needed after partying at a wedding! Thank you to Marie, for being so friendly and wonderful!

The only thing I can think of, is that the duvet was a bit too heavy for the time of year and I was rather warm overnight. Other than that... perfect!

The Poplars Rooms and Cottages has a real family and welcoming feel about it. Amanda was a wonderful hostess and went above and beyond during our stay. Our room was relaxing, comfortable and cosy. It was a really nice touch when Amanda supplied us with homemade scones with jam and cream. The breakfast was delicious and freshly cooked with a great selection of produce, which was locally sourced. It is situated in a great location with only a 20-minute walk into the centre of Thirsk where we sampled the delights of the Racha Thai Bistro, James Herriot Museum and a visit to one of the oldest continuous run cinemas in the Uk, the Ritz Cinema. Good location for visiting other places of interest including Whitby, Robin Hood Bay, Knaresborough and Harrogate to name but a few. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you, Amanda.

We loved our stay! Amanda was such a great host - I'd told her we were arriving later (between 9-10pm) and she still came out to greet us and helped carry my bag up to our room. The room was lovely, cosy and quiet with plenty of space. Amanda and her family are very sweet and balanced a good level of engaging in polite conversation and leaving you be. The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of storage in the room to unpack. The TV has a great selection of channels and TV services like Netflix. There was a lovely added bonus of bathrobes which is a lovely touch and made it feel like proper break away from home. Breakfast was immense, we had cooked breakfast. Amanda was really helpful and offered us some pub suggestions for the quiet Friday night drink we were craving after a long journey. Plenty of parking so you're not lugging suitcases far. It was a lovely stay - like a home away from home and we left feeling so refreshed.

My only piece of criticism was the drain smell in the bathroom. Also, it would have been good to have a full length mirror in the room, but these things would not stop us from returning to The Poplars!

Everything was excellent! The cottage is very quiet and comfortable. Amanda, the host, keeps it spotlessly clean and she turns out a fabulous takeaway cooked breakfast! The bed was huge and we slept very well every night. Lovely sofa too which has a good squish factor for relaxing in. The cottage is really well located for the train station as we took a trip into York; much easier than driving and paying for parking. Really close to Thirsk too, although we drove there and parking was easy to find and not too expensive.

Really the only negative was the lack of a kitchen curtain; the kids who live next door to the property had their trampoline next to the adjoining fence and took to bouncing and pulling faces at us/ cottage next door. Kids will be kids, but just a bit irritating when you're trying to relax in your PJs and they're staring in at you.

Maybe the best B and B I've stayed in. Located just down the road from Thirsk race course where I was going. Easy to find on main road but no traffic noise in room. My room was well appointed and the other rooms were well decorated (A bit of Style) The full Yorkshire breakfast was excellent. Amanda the hoist was very helpful for local knowledge. It was so good I extended my stay.

My self contained room (Attached to house but with own entrance) was up stairs but no problem.

We stayed in the Granary self-catering cottage. Lovely setting. Good size living space. Comfortable bed- seemed to be super king not king size as advertised. Good walk-in shower. Great location as a base for exploring the wider area but also great for local amenities. Great price. Marie was a fab host (Amanda on hol). Takeaway breakfast available from b&b next door. Good off-street parking.

Kettle badly needed de-scaled. Window handles could do with being tightened. Children in the neighbouring garden were bouncing on their trampoline and looking over the fence into the kitchen/living area. Could easily be fixed by having a longer blind on kitchen window. (Noise wasn’t an issue)

Very easy to find, close to Thirsk, easy walking distance to the racecourse. There's a pub a short walk away if you don't want to go into Thirsk centre. Also close to the rail station. We were unable to check-in at the usual time and Amanda was very helpful, ensuring the room was made ready early to enable us to have access and someone could show us where it was. Although on a main road, we had the windows open and it wasn't noisy through the night.

very friendly and welcoming arrival . great looking first impression from the outside (beautiful building) , large , clean , cozy , comfy room . modern bathroom . great tea and coffee facilities . nice touch with as piece of cake , on arrival to help relax . perfect location for all you want to see and do . good selection on the breakfast menu to suit all tastes and belly sizes , great ingredients perfectly cooked . lovely coffee.

only wish we could stay longer

Friendly, clean, comfortable, homely accommodation. Value for money! Free wifi. Everything you needed at hand. 2nd stay at Poplars and coming back again in August 2023. Amanda is lovely, helpful, friendly, nothing a bother, always on hand if needed. We used the local pubs, convenience store and commuted into York via the train station 3 mins walk away. Would definitely recommend !! *****
