The Golden Fleece Hotel, Thirsk, North Yorkshire

It is in the perfect location for exploring Thirsk and in walking distance to the race course. The hotel is clean and comfortable, the staff are welcoming and friendly . There was a good choice for breakfast which was very tasty too.

The hotel is in the central market square. Ideal for other shops and activities to access in the area. Hotel is part of a chain of hotels throughout the country and we are already looking at staying elsewhere within the hotel group. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the facilities are all good with bars and a great dining area.

The hotel didn't have a lift, as it is an old coaching house. The dining room staff were not clearing tables before bringing the next course so no table space, to put things down felt a little claustrophobic at times with no room to move.

Breakfast was delicious; room 12 [up 3 short flights of stairs] was large and bed linen was amazing; great view over market place; good sized bathroom with subtle kickboard lighting for night visits to bathroom; lovely complimentary handwash and handcream, shampoo and shower gel; fan on in room on arrival on what was a very hot day, was appreciated

anti-slip mat in bath was black with mould and pretty disgusting; black mould on tiles in shower in bath; no water bottles in room; no towels in bathroom - had to ask twice for supplies; lady was a bit surly at breakfast when we asked for milk for the tea, and to top-up tea and coffee pots :(

All the staff were very welcoming, helpful and friendly. Breakfast was excellent with a great choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, croissants etc as well as cooked dishes from full English to Eggs Benedict / Florentine / Royale / scrambled etc. Dinner choices were varied with something for everyone, and although they were clearly fixed across the Coaching Inn chain, they were nevertheless well presented and tasty. We would recommend the mushroom and tarragon soup starter which was almost a meal in itself. It's also worth mentioning that although there was background music, it was quiet and unobtrusive, a welcome relief after staying in a hotel with loud modern 'music' in the background! Car parking behind the hotel was very convenient. The walls of the bar and restaurant display historic photos of the hotel and staff over the past century, and a short history of the hotel was available in the room along with a beautifully illustrated book with extracts from books by local Vet Alf Wight (aka James Herriot).

Absolutely nothing to complain about.

The room was very spacious and I loved it that there was a dressing table with mirror for getting ready to go out. The food is excellent especially the breakfast with lots of choice with the hot breakfast being cooked to order. All the staff are lovely especially the lady at reception who was very friendly and helpful.

We had almost run out of toilet roll so put out the sign for room service. When we returned we couldn't see what had been done other than the bed being straightened. The dirty cups and glasses were still in the room and no toilet roll had been left. We had to go down to reception to ask for more. This was very disappointing as I had upgraded to a suite for my husband's birthday..

Hotel is well maintained and the room well appointed with good quality products on the drinks tray. The shower was good and the water hot. The staff were friendly. Car park was fine, although limited spaces

The restaurant was satisfactory but the service was haphazard at dinner and breakfast on all occasions. It was only after ordering that we were advised some items were not available on the menu and some of the food was not very satisfactory. However, they took corrective action, which we appreciated. They could not offer non alcoholic spirits due to a problem with the supplier, which we thought odd when these drinks can be bought in any supermarket, but being part of a chain we suspect the manager does not have such discretion.

The breakfast are brilliant, a really good full English, lots of other choices including healthy options.The dining room is spacious ad very welcoming.We ate there i. The evenings, good choices again healthier options if you didn’t want too much to eat.A few items on the menu not available during our stay,but plenty of other choices available. The staff are very frendly. Thoroughly enjoyed all our food.An excellent range of wines available. We had a room outside of the main building, lovely.

The bathroom was far to small, felt very hemmed in. Could do with the bath taking out and a modern shower replacing it.

This was our third stay at the Golden Fleece, we love the hotel and always find the staff friendly and accommodating. the property is always exceptionally clean and the rooms comfortable. The first time we stayed we were in the Annex and had such a good stay we came back and brought friends who also fell in love with Thirsk and the hotel. Our second stay was in the hotel which was so comfy, and our last stay was in the Dick Turpin Suite which was just great. The food, and staff in the restaurant, are exceptional and the Full English breakfast really does set you up for the day.

Nothing - the hotel is an old property with a lot of history - for us the creaky stairs and quirkiness of the hotel is just perfect.

The staff was fabulous and went the extra mile. Spacious rooms. Very clean. Beds and sheets and decor were fabulous. They gave us a lot of room amenities which was amazing. Very charming. The food was great at this place. The price for what we got was amazing. Everyone is so cordial at this property and customer service is top notch.

It can be a little bit noisy at night due to people at the bar downstairs and they are open late at night The rooms aren't air conditioned so they were hot but at least they gave us a fan for our room.

We’ve stayed at this hotel before but in one of the rooms in the back so it was lovely to have front facing room. And also where we were on the top floor, we had lovely views of the market town and views beyond. It was just lovely and the beds were heavenly & we slept well 😊

The only gripe I had of the property is housekeeping came everyday to make the beds & clean the bathroom, however apart from providing cleans cups, never provided clean glasses or took away the wine glasses we had in our room. Also they left a bottle of disinfectant spray on our bathroom sink.
