Stunning gardens and lovely public onsen. Rooms were very spacious, clean and had a great view of the gardens.
We paid extra for the private onsen which was disappointing as it was very small and smelly. The public onsen was much better and free if you stayed at the hotel.

We chose to stay in a Japanese style room for the experience while in Japan. The room was very big and had a beautiful view overlooking the garden. The Ryokan is centrally located in Hakone, walking distance from the train station and the main part of town (which in my opinion was absolutely key allowing for convenience of doing everything we wanted to do in a short stay). The garden is GORGEOUS and the property is very well maintained. The staff is lovely. The onsen were fabulous and open for many hours of the day. Only used the public onsen which were exceptionally clean (and included in the price!) and open for many hours of the day and we used them many times during our stay. Would absolutely stay here again.

The open air public baths were beautiful and overlooked a nice garden. I have a tattoo across my shoulders; though the hotel's website says people with tattoos need to book the private bath, they let me use the main baths after I briefly described it, saying that it's not really the style of tattoo they're concerned about. The huge main garden is really the highlight of the hotel – you're free to wander its paths or relax by the pond. Our room had a great view of it, and I imagine most rooms in the hotel do. We loved our spacious traditional-style room and found the tatami mattresses very comfortable. It was so nice to wake up to the sound of the river and the water and birds in the garden. The staff was also really friendly and nice. It was easy to communicate in English.
The bathroom and amenities felt a bit dated, but were clean. The swimming pool was closed (we think until the summer?). You should be aware that the public baths are closed for cleaning from 9am to 2pm, so if you're not staying long, make sure you check in with enough time to enjoy them.

The Onsen facilities were beautiful, especially the outdoor ones with a garden view. We had a large room that also had a beautiful interior view of the traditional Japanese garden.
Adding on meals (breakfast/dinner) was confusing on booking.com and we were unable to purchase onsite due to it being full by the time we arrived.

Our stay at this ryokan in Hakone was delightful. The room was incredibly spacious, providing us with ample space and freedom to relax. The beautifully maintained gardens were undoubtedly the highlight, offering a serene and picturesque setting. The iced matcha in the reception area was a refreshing touch that we enjoyed. While the hotel is quite large and may not offer the intimate, local ryokan experience some seek, the attentive and personalized service from the staff made us feel like we were in a five-star establishment. Of course, this level of comfort came at a price, but compared to other options in Hakone, the price was exceptionally good. In summary, its size, the spacious rooms, stunning gardens, and exceptional staff service made our stay memorable and enjoyable.

I cannot state it clearly enough, this place is AWESOME. The contrast between this place and the busy life in Tokyo during my trip made this place feel like heaven on earth. We even saw fireflies in the hotel garden. Can't recommend enough. Note - This place is way bigger than the pictures show. I forgot my camera battery and my battery charger in the room when leaving, they sent it to my next hotel the day after and I got it before having to charge my camera again. Super polite and super service thank you!
Only thing I didn't like is that I failed to book dinner and I could not add it on arrival. Totally my fault and understandable that I couldn't. I'll just have to come back to try their food, it looks fantastic :)

Stunning gardens that really make the stay, just wish we were staying longer so we could spend more time in them. Lovely surroundings, perfect location near the train station and plenty of places to get food within walking distance. Rooms are very authentic and we had a beautiful garden view. Onsens were very relaxing, especially outdoor pools. Provided ample different toiletries which made it feel very luxurious. Staff were very attentive and even brought our luggage to our room for us.
Unfortunately the traditional Japanese beds and pillows were really awful to sleep on - we had anticipated this though. I know the hotel wanted to remain as authentic as possible but just thinking there must be a modern version in the traditional style that provides more comfort (or even give the option for normal pillows). This is the only negative to the whole experience though as we thoroughly enjoyed our stay apart from lack of/poor sleep.

Really enjoyed our stay here. The rooms are spacious and it's a novelty to sleep on the futons. The main highlight is the gardens, they're absolutely beautiful. The staff are great and it was easy to book a slot in the private onsen. The steakhouse on site is fantastic - best steak we've ever had.
Only minor complaints - The hotel is old. This didn't bother us, but don't expect mod cons as in big Japanese cities. This means everything looks a bit tired, including the bathrooms/private onsen. The hotel is very big - it's quite a maze to navigate your way around. The pillows are really uncomfortable - this is comfortably the worst thing about the place. Hakone Yumoto has very little by way of entertainment/nightlife - so make sure you spend your day doing the circuit.

I feel like everyone's reviews are so picky and harsh. This place was absolutely stunning and incredible. Upon arriving the staff rushed to meet us and grabbed our bags and carried them to our rooms. Yes, since the rooms are far from the front desk- this was wonderful. The gardens themselves are a treat. I spent the first two hours there just roaming around and soaking it all in. A total zen oasis. I loved the rooms; clean, spacious, and traditional. The spas themselves were very clean and open all night, from 2 pm to 9 am. I stayed here after walking 70k steps in Tokyo over 3 days and it brought my body and soul back to life. I didn't choose the dinner option when I initially made the booking, but I emailed them before arriving and they were accommodating to add us into dinner. This place is a resort- so you do pay for that. If you just want a generic onsen experience, you can find that elsewhere. This is a complete experience, very romantic. I truly have no complaints. It was not crowded, I almost had the entire onsen to myself. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. This hotel is also literally one block away from the main road and just down the street from the main train station. Great location. Thank you for everything!
I want to preface by saying the dinner was good, fancy. But everything had undertones of fish. So, if you don't like fish, beware. But, if that's not your vibe, the town is one block away with tons of food options.

we requested a family room and were assigned a beautiful room, almost a small apartment looking into the garden Traditional decoration but in a modern hotel, quiet with air conditioning and hotel facilities The open air Onsen in the garden is just impressive. You must try yourself taking a bath in open air. There are also indoor onsen with the same spring water. Staff are very friendly You can reach the hotel walking from the train station, it is just a short distance
The day we stayed in the hotel there was no restaurant service for dinner or breakfast and we could not find many options for breakfast, though there is a kind of cafe next to the train station...
