The food was amazing! There was a lot of food that was local and enjoyable to eat. If you enjoy seafood, then the food was delicious and presented so nicely. The onsens were very enjoyable to soak in, with a choice of 3 private and 1 public onsen. Very considerate extras - combs, razors, cream etc in case you need and the service is fantastic. Extremely friendly and helpful. We loved the location as it is about 25 minutes to get to Gora to sightsee or 40 minutes to Lake Ashino. We enjoyed sleeping to the sound of a river at night. Was so peaceful, soothing and relaxing.
Some of the sliding doors were a little squeaky but it wasn't too bad. Also, as it is a Ryokan they make the bed where you eat so you can't lay on your bed.

Our stay at Fukuzumiro was one of the most unique and wonderful experiences of my life. We were in Japan for two weeks on honeymoon and were recommended this traditional ryokan by a friend. I'm so glad we stayed because it was an incredibly special experience - from the moment we arrived and exchanged our shoes for slippers and our travelling clothes for traditional yukata, we felt like we'd stepped into a different time. The room and the whole building are spectacular - all wood and paper panels, tatami mats and screen doors, right beside a beautiful flowing river, up against the mountain - it looks like an old Japanese painting. There are several onsen hot spring baths available and we were able to book a private one (just put your room name onto the list in the foyer, it's really easy). It was so luxurious and relaxing, and after this we went back to our room where our kind and attentive hostess laid out the most incredible multi-course meal for us. Just try everything - each dish is more delicious and exquisite than the last. Our futons were very comfortable and the sound of the river lulled us into a deep sleep. The next day we opted for the Japanese breakfast which was almost as extensive as the dinner, and another onsen session. This is a real VIP experience and a taste of old Japan - worth every penny.

This place felt like stepping straight into a ghibli movie! The view from the window looked out over a river and a tree in blossom. There was so much space, the staff are really kind and helpful, the location is great - walking distance to the town and station for adventures but on the outskirts for peace and quiet. The breakfast was an experience in itself, we felt really spoiled. The Onsen was just beautiful, we booked a private one because you can't wear a swimming costume, really easy and cheap to book and just stunning.
Only downside was a shared bathroom with no shower - this didn't cause any major hiccups because you shower before you hit the Onsen anyway, and we shared with one other room. It was a bit tatty compared with the rest of the place, so be aware and book your Onsen with shower unless you're happy to share the public (single sex) one. I was too shy!!

The most charming traditional inn - positioned perfectly on the water. Quiet, but walking distance into town for restaurants, etc. The staff were so kind. We travelled with two small children (1,3) and they were very welcome. We could book the private onsen twice a day to enjoy as a family and had amazing dinner in the room each night. The food was excellent. The service was excellent. Don’t be put off by the lack of private bathrooms - the whole experience will make up for it. You bathe before using the onsen in a private space anyway. Toilets are just down the hall. Our son loved feeding the fish on site each day, and using the big hall to run around and play. If we ever come back to Japan - we will stay here for sure
Nothing.

What an amazing traditional Inn. We only stayed for one night as a little treat but how incredible. The staff are amazing, we had a lady called Minori (apologies if I have got this wrong) who was simply splendid. From the moment you arrive you feel like you're in a Ghibli movie, with 3 scalding hot private onsen to choose from (book when you're there by writing your name in the slot), and 2 gendered onsen which switch at 7pm. We arrived at 4pm and made the most of our bath time, taking one before dinner, one after, and one just before breakfast. The dinner and breakfast was first rate - one of the best experiences of our lives. The service and spectacle alone is worth the extra fee - inform them before arrival you want dinner. Futon beds made out for you were so comfy it was hard to wake up! Overall I could not fault it. We would have loved to stay longer but couldn't really afford it. I would definitely watch a video online about staying at a Ryokan just so there are no confusing aspects to contend with. If you're doing all the Hakone activities in the day like we did it is fantastic, but I would really recommend making the most of your time here and would advise getting here no later than 5pm as dinner is at 6pm.
Some areas are a bit old but I found this quite endearing and unless you're very picky this is clearly a world class establishment

Very easy to get to from the train station or bus. The staff was amazingly kind and helpful! The food was incredible and so beautifully prepared. The room was spacious with gorgeous views of the stream and a sitting area to overlook the water. I used two different private onsens, one at night and one in the morning and both were perfect. Definitely a peaceful and rejuvenating stay!

It was very special to stay in a traditional ryokan, and it was my first experience of a Japanese-style room. The staff were excellent, and the care and attention provided in setting up my bed and preparing my breakfast, were greatly appreciated. They even organised a special order of the local rice cakes for me to take with me the next morning - delicious morsels which I have tried without success to ration. The guest book containing information from staff about local attractions was also excellent, and a lovely alternative to a bunch of brochures.
A ryokan guide for dummies in English would have been helpful - including information on why all the different slippers (different slippers for the bathroom - really?), the process for the onsen (although I knew this quite well), where to brush your teeth (the toilet room or the onsen area?), how to eat the breakfast (what goes with what - although the staff did a great job of explaining this) etc. I also didn't know which onsen was which after I booked, as the names and numbers were not on the doors in romaji - this would have been helpful.

It's a quaint old Japanese hotel, over 100 years old. Situated by a river with many views of the surrounding hills and trees, it's a relaxing place to spend a night outside the city. The staff were very pleasant and accomodating, giving us a tour. Their English was good. I am very grateful they prepared a gluten free dinner and breakfast for me, it was a fantastic Japanese fine dining food experience. The onsens are scorching hot. Make sure you book your time slot as soon as you check in. The two of us enjoyed an hour in a private Onsen at night and 30 mins in the morning before leaving. We were here during January, it was chilly in the hotel but it makes the Onsen usage worthwhile. They provide heaters and electric blankets in the room, so we slept very well. The bathrooms are in the hallway, no ensuites.
A ditzy American lady barged into our private Onsen session while we were naked, claiming it was her turn. We locked the main door but I think she entered through a connecting door. Maybe the signage around the hotel could be better.

I would like to write this review in English so I can recommend to international travelers. This is a traditional Japanese ryokan but very suitable for travelers. They not only cater for different dietary requirements such as vegetarian or vegan, much of the information is available in English and the staff can also speak English. Mami took care of us during a 1 night stay there, and we both enjoyed the service, food, and the onsen. The room felt comfortable and had a nice view out into the inner garden. The location is also ideal with a bus stop a couple minutes walk away but also you can walk from the nearest station within 15 minutes (slight up hill for those with suitcases!)

The staff were very attentive and the service was amazing. The meals were excellent with a authentic quality Japanese food.
The hotel is quite rundown in parts. It is very comfortable and feels very authentic but for the price I was surprised that some maintenance had not been completed.
