The Great Western Hotel

The hotel was perfect for our overnight stay in Oban. Our room faced the water, which was a plus. Wonderful breakfast and dinner included. Both delicious and filling. Enjoyed the sunset in the bar area. Staff made me a perfect cocktail! Wish we could have stayed longer and we would definitely stay at this hotel if we return.

We have no issues with this hotel. No negative comments at all.

Superb view over the Bay, night and day. Spacious and comfortable room and for once we had a chair each to sit on and admire the view - not always the case in a double or twin room - and the TV worked - again not always the case. Staff were helpful and accommodating. We enjoyed our stay.

The hospitality tray was a bit basic, Nescafe sachets of coffee and Tetley T-Bags only - a wee biscuit would've been nice. We paid well for the sea view and feel the breakfast should have been included as we did not think it was worth £10 each, per day, but then we don't go for a cooked breakfast even on holiday so for others who do it probably would seem worth it. The conveyor belt toaster ignored the bread on the first run through and then burnt it black the second time around. Perhaps some help by staff with adjusting the burn rate would be useful or even what side down the bread goes in on the second run for those not used to this type of toaster.

The waterfront view from our window was amazing and enjoyed a spectacular sunset! The bar within the Hotel was a fun spot to have a nightcap before heading to bed; our bartender (can’t remember his name but he was from Portugal) was very friendly and made us feel welcomed.

The location was not quite in the city center but we love to walk and it is just a couple of minutes to get to shopping and pubs. There is limited onsite parking however there are 2 car parks a short distance away so it was not really a hardship. We dropped off our belongings at check in and then parked our car.

Although we didnt eat in the restaurant this time I am giving top scores because of the room we were given with its spectacular top floor sea views,spaciousness and comfort, almost a pent house suite. The staff were also exceptionally helful and professional.

Fantastic view and position in Oban, next to all the sights and in walking distance from everything.

I would say we opted for this property as it was described as pet friendly, but I’d describe it as more pet tolerable. Everyone was lovely about it and I appreciate travelling with a dog is a privilege and not a right. More facilities to ease the stay would be great e.g water/food bowls, doggie towels after a rainy day in Oban. Radiators were also not really on during our stay, so drying out our dogs towel wasn’t the easiest! Overall though it was very pleasant.

Room not serviced on one day, when we complained to reception we were told that housekeeping were very busy so room didn't get serviced or tea and coffee etc wasn't replenished either, we had to complain about the shower as the trap wasn't taking away the water and when we turned on tap in the sink the water and grit came up in the shower, complained to Reception and was told that evening on arrival back to hotel that it had been fixed and it hadn't, water was still gurgling up into shower

view from room was great but window needs some attention...very heavy to open. room size was very generous , i did not expect so much room. old damp patch needs some attention but overall very smart. bed comfortable.

reception and lounge a bit soul less/ could be made more welcoming. there has obviously been some water ingress problems in ceilings - they appear dry now so please paint over. The marks just draw attention to it. The plasterwork and cornices in the rooms are fabulous - show them off!

we stayed in room 309 the view from the 3 windows was amazing, the room and en-suite were clean and fresh. Shirley myself and our wee dog (Ted) had a lovely time, because we had our dog we had our breakfast in the lounge which was another bonus with the views each morning. Staff were professional and so friendly just adding to our relaxing enjoyable few days.

We had a problem with our mixer tap for the shower, the hotel was having a new boiler fitted, we were offered another room right away, however, our choice, we were happy with the room and managed, maintenace issues do happen. not a complaint just a note.

Our room was spacious and had a great view. It was classed as a superior double on booking.com and I would happily stay again. It's in a great position in beautiful Oban. Staff are helpful and they let us leave our luggage there until time to leave for our next transport. Bar is great and enjoys the same great view as our room did.

Yes, it does need renovating and the floor is creaky, but I expect that that goes for all of the grand old hotels on the waterfront there.

Like many we were staying on our way to an island and like for many the ferry was cancelled the hotel were really helpful holding our room incase we didn’t make the ferry the following day when they could have easily just made us have to check out /pay for another night . The staff were all efficient and friendly and the dog was made most welcome . The room we stayed in was large and airy great for us .

I think you would be nit picking to fault the hotel with the price you pay and the location that it is in . It’s an old building so of course things could be a bit cleaner ,few things updated but it was fine
